Dissasembling Enfield .303?

Hey all,

I want to re-fishing the wood on my 1950 Enfield .303 FTR but there is one screw I'm having a problem with. The screw goes through one side and seems to enter some sort of clip. When I turn the screw the clip turns as well. It looks like I would need some kind of a tool that would look something like a flathead screwdriver with the center cut out to form sort of a little 2 prong fork. Best way I can describe it. Hoping someone here knows what I'm talking about.
 
I wonder if it's the dreaded; "Ishy-Screw", I saw one that had one of these screws through the forend ahead of the magazine, I didn't see if it had a nut holding it in there. I wouldn't know how to get it out, sounds like your best bet might be to measure the slot in the nut thingie and make up a special tool for it out of some scrap steel. Best regards Tony.
 
I always use surplus rifle dot com for taking things apart and getting them back together. They haven't let me down yet.

I second Northman's comment, since a few months ago I used the instructions on that site to strip down my #4 Enfield, minus removing the buttstock which was thankfully not necessary for what I needed to do!

Is this cross bolt just above the trigger in the wooden forestock. You probably have a NO.4Mk2 or a NO.5. I believe they both have the trigger fastened to the receiver and not to the trigger guard. I think it is some kind of strengthener for the back end of the forestock. It probably doesn't need to be removed to refinish the wood.
 
Your rifle was converted to Mk. 1/2 when it underwent FTR, and you are referring to the reinforcement screw that goes through at the rear of the stock? This screw replaced the reinforcing strap used on Mk. I rifles. Just make the two pronged tool to fit the nut. You are not going to be able to remove the stock from the action without removing this screw.
Incidentally, will refinishing the stocks increase or decrease the value and collectability of the rifle?
No. 5s were not set up this way.
 
tiriaq thats exactly the screw I'm talking about. Maybe what I'll do is just cut a flathead screwdriver to act as a tool to hold that weird nut in place while I remove the screw.

Refinishing the stock will decrease its value but I'm not a collector and I don't think it would be worth much anyways as its sporterized.

Use a fine tip screw driver to hold it, works for me every time....
