Other than using a range finder, are you guys using any apps for calculating the distance to your targets?
I have been using an app called Map O Meter. When I set up my target I will hold my phone over it and drop a pin to my phones location, I will then move back to where I want to shoot from and drop another pin, the two pins are shown in a google earth type map and it will tell me the distance in meters or yards from pin to pin. It also allows you to save the set pins so you can keep it for reference later on.
Combined with isnipe I was able to set my target 450 yards and get first round hit using the mildots on my scope.

Before I got my range finder I used the Distance Measure app on my iPhone. It's really simple, works like the measuring tool on google earth but sounds like your app probably is better.

If you know the size of your target, use the recticle to determine it. I've got a NightForce with NPR1 so can see how the size relates to one MOA... other recticles have measuring tools in one of the corners, takes a little math but that's just long range shooting and why we usually carry a calculator to find shooting solutions.

You set up the target and moved back. Didn't you know how far? In any case, you won't have time to play with your phone if you're hunting and you'll know the distances on a range. You should be able to or learn to judge distances by eye anyway.

I set the target then drive back to a spot I want to shoot from, if I was walking I would count my paces but that's not what this post was about. Also it's not about hunting or shooting on a range obviously on a set range you know the distances. I'm quite good at range estimating by eye but again that's not what I was posting about.

What if the deer moves before you walk back to your shooting position ?

Obviously you leave the deer hog tied before turning your back on it;)

I use an app called "GPS Distance Meter" on my Android phone. Press "From here" button to start, then begin walking and when you reach the spot your target is, press "To here" button and it tells you what the distance is within 3 meters. Would prefer a system that gave the current distance as I walked so I would know when to stop when wanting to set up targets at a set distance but it gives me a spot to go further or back from. Find it to be simple and handy when gopher shooting to measure out some of my longer, prouder shots.

For those like me that don't like doing math you can try the "Mil Dot Master" Nice little slide ruler that works it out for you. You use your scope to get the mils to cover a known height and line up the charts. I like electronic toys but in the shooting environment a good old plastic card is worth looking at. You can drop it, use it in the rain, bright sunlight and it never runs out of power.
