I had been putting off doing this until tonight. I'm sure there are a lot of different ways to do this, the method I chose probably wasn't the easiest... What was once a plastic pickle tub is now my surprisingly effective cheek rest. I'll post up some more pictures once I make it more visually appealing. Anyone else have a DIY job they'd like to share?

You might be a redneck....sorry, I couldn't resist. Seriously though, the plastic in that barrel will likely become brittle in the cold. Watch it doesn't greak or shatter on you. I can't say I really care for the color either. It does nothing for the nice black contrasting stock to your fancy polished action. The nuts and bolts add that "Bubba" flair to it too, but at least they match the finish on the rifle.......Just my humble opinion though. Guess as long as it works for you, and you don't mind the looks, it's good to go....:runaway:

I was thinking about making the same type of set up using fiberglass. I just hate the thought of drilling 2 holes through my laminate stock. I have some heavy (1/4") rubber gasket material here, I was thinking about making a glass one and putting the rubber inside and just slipping it over the stock. I'm not sure how well it would stay still. I should be able to make it so you have to spread it a bit to get it over the stock thus nipping it a little once it's on. I may try it later this week.

Hahaha this CERTAINLY isn't the finished product, think of it as a rough cut. I plan on forming the plastic more and painting it matte black. It won't look as slick as a Rooster33 but it cost me $0 haha. I did consider how brittle the plastic might get in the cold because this is only a temp until I have the money for an entirely new stock in the spring. Luckily I use the same kinds of buckets for hauling compost around the yard. They had been outside since last spring, and yesterday morning (-15) I went outside and kicked one around for a while, couldn't crack it.

cday, I didn't even think twice about drilling through the craptastic Savage stock, but I can see why you'd be hesitant to drill into your laminate. Let me know how it goes if you try a cheek rest.

I'm going to try and finish it today.

Gee, maybe it works but the sight of the gun makes me want to cry.

SOme fellow made a cheek piece using pvc pipe and it looks pretty good, you'll have to search the forum to find it though. He also drilled the stock to attach.
If the home made piece actually hugs the stock it might be an idea to use self adhesive velcro. Trace the outline on the stock and apply the velcro to line the inside of the add on with the mating piece of velcro.
Can't hurt to try.

The piece hugs the stock quite tightly and I especially like the velcro idea, thanks zebra. I'm working on shaping it now, should have an update by the end of the day that doesn't induce tears in most CGN'ers haha.

I just started making my mold. I may lay up some glass after supper. I'll take a few pics along the way and let you know how it turns out. (If I'm not to embarrassed to post it here, lol.)

Try this:
Wrap butt tightly with Saran wrap
Build a modeling clay dam the height and profile of the cheek rest you want.
Fill the dam with Bondo (with fiber in it). Let it cure.
Do some finish shaping with a rasp and sand smooth.
Remove from stock and peel saran wrap off the back.
Paint the cheekpiece to match or contrast with the stock as you prefer.
Attach the finished cheekpiece to the stock. If you want it permanent use a good contact cement. You may have to scribe a profile of the cheek piece on some plastic stocks and roughen the area inside your mark with coarse sandpaper to give the glue something to cling too.
If you want a removable cheek piece use some double sided tape.

Why not buy some black plastic and do it right? The gun cost a lot of money so why put garbage on it just because it's free?
A plastic supply store should be able to sell you some black plastic for cheap. A heat gun is ~$15. You could do it right and make it look good for so little money the bucket just doesn't make sense.
Kudos for the DIY attitude though.

I'm a student, which doesn't mean that I don't have $15-$20 to make one with new materials, but I'd rather spend nothing right now and save that money to put towards a complete stock in the spring when I can work full-time. Overall I'm really pleased with the results. It doesn't look store bought but it will certainly suit my need for this season. Here is the finished cheek rest.

The finished results look pretty good...nice job! As long as it works, who the heck cares about the bolts through the stock? Not every gun in the cabinet has to be a safe queen. :)

Carriage Bolts

It's not a bad idea to do it yourself. At the very least you will see how to improve upon it if it works. One problem you may encounter is the protruding edge of the bolt/nut. Use a carriage bolt to get a more flush/smooth finish on your cheek side and it may keep it from catching or ripping your cheek.
I've been thinking of a type of rest for myself, and my issue is a way to attach it that will look good. Let us know how it works. Mark

I made up mine today out of fiberglass. I've got everything done except for the paint, the only gelcoat I had in the shed was grey/white. I'll pick up some black tomorrow. I took some pics but the computer doesn't want to cooperate with the camera, when my sister comes out this weekend I'll download them onto her laptop and post them then.

Mine is not adjustable however as I didn't want to drill holes in my laminate stock. I made a shell like SeamusMac (3 layers) off a mould made out of a piece of 2x12 with the top edge rounded over. I then built up the required thickness on top with polyfair, then covered it with another 4 layers of glass. I then gave it another little skim of polyfair just to make it smooth. I could pretty well use the cheekpiece for a target and still wouldn't destroy it, lol.

I noticed on one of the test fits that the bottom edges would stick out a little from the stock as the mould was straight and the stock is curved. So before I put on the final layers of glass I shimmed out the middle and pulled the bottom in using tie wire. It now hugs the stock perfectly, in fact it hugs it a little too well. It's a good thing once I get it painted and put on it's staying on because it ain't easy to get on there, lol.

Thanks for putting it back in my head to make one SeamusMac. I was thinking about making one for a while but didn't bother with it, all I needed was a little push to get off my rear and go do it, lol. I'll get some pics up this weekend.

That sounds interesting...can't wait to see the pics!
