Picked up a Pietta 1873 SAA from the EE section last month,

I really enjoy the Colour Case Hardening and deep blueing, but the grips were made of Balsa I suspected. I got brave went to to local Windsor Plywood and picked up there nicest piece of Ebony. I have lots of wood working experience but never grips, and i figured it wouldnt be too hard.

Using the original grips as a template and cross referencing to the frame to confirm, i started my work. I decided to make a one piece as i do enjoy the clean look of them, but i was nervous about the fit and it turning out to be sloopy. Took a couple of evenings, but nothing crazy and the fit was excellent.

I was very surprised, and im actually thinking about making another with listing it on EE.

Whattcha think?

Wow, great job! I tried going the shortcut route and bought a roughly unfitted spare grip and one-of-a-kind made snake insert but never got around to it.

Looks very nice. Well done.

I think I recall reading that you're not allowed to sell homemade items on the EE when I signed up for it though.

Beautiful job ! ! ! !

That's a pretty unique piece of ebony for it to have all that light coloring in it. Typically it's black with at most some dark brown streaks and the odd sliver of coffee with cream colouring. What you've got there suggests zebrawood to me. I wonder if it is some zebrawood that was misplaced in the Ebony section.

But that in no way takes away from the nice job you did making the grips.

Whether or not they allow selling home made items such as this on the EE it's a moot point anyway. On 1873's the grips really should be fitted to the gun. There's slight changes from gun to gun that would result in bad fitting on some combinations.

Thanks for the good words. I googled ebony and it's definitely not ebony or any kind of. You right that it's probably Zebra wood, doesn't matter what it is, I like the way it looks.
