Last winter I decided to endure the project of the "tacticool target" 10/22. You have probably seen endless versions of what I just described to you on this forum however I had a strict budget. Being a college student, and deciding to do a semi custom build rather than paying my rent was a very easy decision
. My hardest part of the build was the barrel, and being on a budget there were many that didn't make the price point. Then I heard of Dlask 10/22 Barrels from a some shooters down at the local range, so I decided to look into them. There are many reviews of Dlask barrels on the web, both good and bad but for the most part good. So here is my review on the $179.00 pipe.
So here is the run down of the rifle before somebody asks.
Ruger 10/22
Hogue Overmolded stock (.920 barrel channel)
TacPro cheek rest
Dlask picitiny scope base (extended)
Dlask .920 16.5'' bull barrel w/sporter chamber
Weaver Tactical rings (I believe medium height)
VISM 2.5-10x50mm (Illuminated mildot)
So as I said, This barrel is $179.00 it is a full bull contour that measures exactly .9210 on the callipers, comes with the sporter chamber, and is 16.5'' long. The barrel is also threaded 1/2x28tpi if a suppressor or flash hider is desired. Packaging was nothing special, as the barrel came in a unmarked white box and generously wrapped in bubble wrap with a barrel mesh protecter installed. My barrel came with a thread protector, however on the Dlask website it says "thread protector not included" not sure if they have changed that since i bought the barrel or if the vendor supplied one.
Installation on this guy was simple, backing off the barrel block on the 10/22 involves removing 2 allen screws, swapping barrels, installing go/no gauges, and cranking everything backdown.
When it came to shooting with the barrel for the first time, this is when the problems started. On the description of the barrel, Dlask states "The Sporter Chamber will shoot ALL ammo reliably including CCI". When I went out to the range with my 3 ammo types (CCI, Winchester White Box, and Winchester copper plated) I could hardly get a round to chamber. At this point I though I installed the barrel incorrectly , but after checking with the go gauges one more time an installation issue was off the table. The sported chamber might has well been the match chamber at this point. The only ammunition that would barely feed was the winchester copper plated hollowpoints with a 1 out of 5 on average that would fit into the chamber.
That range session was quickly turned into a work session as most of my time was spent prying brass cases from the chamber with a flat head screw driver.
Now I won't completely bash this barrel, as since then I have found 2 ammuntion types that work flawlessly. Remington yellow jacket's and CCI minimag's have been my "go to" ammunition with this barrel. The remington has been the most accurate giving be a sub 0.5" to 0.5" at 50m.
I have tried going back to bulk packs in hope that the Dlask sported chamber has loosened up, but with the same chambering issues as when the barrel was brand new.
Overall its an excellent barrel with great accuracy and a great pricepont, however when a company advertises their product being reliable with "all types" of ammunition when its not; one can get very discouraged. However I have found ammunition that works but with the recent CCI shortage I have only been able to find the Remington ammunition on a weekly basis.
I hope that others will have a better span of ammunition they can use in their Dlask barrels, and for all I know I could have a lemon. However I'm happy and I will continue using this beast.
Cheers.
