Do .223 AICS mags fit & function in .308 AICS mag wells?

Yes sir, I have a Cadex Competition Lite chassis for Tikka T3 using AICS mags.
I have successfully used both 223 Rem and 308 Win magazines with 223 Rem and 308 Win barreled actions!
(I was somewhat apprehensive when I first tried the 223 Rem magazine with a 223 Rem barreled action)

Also, now that I can use 223 Rem, the 308 Win barreled action is gathering dust...

The only issue you might encounter, like I am having, is with the smaller case diameter your bolt might skip over a round occasionally. I'm getting an overlength magazine latch and grind it to fit, so it holds the magazine just a little higher. This is because some magazines vary very slightly in dimensions. Of course YMMV, just something to look for.

Thanks very much, fellas. I suspected as much but had nothing to confirm with, first hand.

Alpheus, had you tried fiddling with the feed lips to get enough height? Assuming the mags are steel, of course. Or was it just too far to go and not enough lip?

The magazines are MDT polymer. I tried with a metal Accurate mag, but ended up trashing it. It only happens 1-2 rounds out of 10, simply need a little more contact area.

I haven't had any issues running MDT plastic .223 mags in both an ACC and an ESS. I run that rig as a switch-barrel so it also sees metal Accurate and MDT mags for .308/6 Creed, all of which run fine as well.

I have an RPR running Ruger's version of the 223 AI mag and it works fine in that rifle. It does not run properly with MDT mags though... The rounds get vertical in the mag and it's a train wreck every time.

Now I run my rounds about 2.5 inches long... not SAMMI spec 2.25 inches long.... which is the whole point of using AI mags for a 223.

I have a Defiance action on order in 223 that I think will be going into a Cadex chassis, so I hope there will be no issues. When I spoke with Mike at Defiance, he said that he has the exact same thing and has had no issues.

But this KRG looks kinda hot to me so just might go that way instead of Cadex.

I had MDT 223 mags in an AI AX chassis with a 700 - no problems that I can remember.

The 223 and 308 sized mags should work interchangeably.

I hav a couple MDT polymer mags that I use in a Cadex chassis, and they flip vertical in the mag if you cycle the bolt to aggressively. They are crap compared to the metal AICS mags

Interesting...
I have a Cadex and some plastic MDT mags..

I'll need to make a point of trying them out.

The 12 rounder from MDT does not work well in my Cadex... I don't have the mag with a striker plate... because the accurate mag that came with the rifle didn't have one either... could be I need a striker plate version... not sure.

This is a follow up to my previous post above...

I measured the distance between the feed lips on the MDT 12 round mag and found the lips were closer together than other AI pattern mags I had.

So I bent the lips outward to the same dimensions as the other mags and it fixed the problem.

Now the MDT 12 round mag feeds fine for me.

I’m gunna be that guy, and bring this thread back from the dead....

I’m building a 223AI, and I’m planning on using a AI compatible bottom metal. I can get the MDT mags for $39.99 or the AI mags for $100. I’ll spend the cash, but if the MDTs work, I can get 5 mags as opposed to 2 on my mag budget....

Anyone out there have experience with the MDT polymer 223 AI pattern mags?

Cheers!

I have 5 of them and they work great in both an ESS and 2x ACC chassis.
