Just bought one, couldn't pass it up for 200.00 bucks. haven't shot it yet. Could you give me your pro's and con's on the rifle ? I plan to use 150 factory loads for deer only. do these rifles shoot good enough for deer from 25 to 250 yds ? any tricks to make them more accurate and reliable ? I've heard a lot of bad things about them now I'm wondering if I wasted my time and money. I've been shooting a BAR carbine for years, it's so good it's unbelieveable, I just felt naked with out a back up or loaner.

For $200 it's hard to go wrong. The 7400's seem to work best with spire-point type ammo of 150gr or less.

Frankly, I've found they CAN be jam-o-matics, though some inidvidual guns seem better than others. I have one I used to use and it's never jammed on me in several hundred rounds, but a buddy who got his at the same time has about a jam for every two magazines.

If yours works well, good. If not, flip it and buy something else. They are finicky to work on and a gunsmith to fix it might cost more than you paid for the gun.

They are more than accurate enough for hunting right out of the box. Also bear in mind, these are not build for a high volume of fire. Most of the people who own and love 7400's shoot only enough ammo per year through them to sight in and shoot their deer or moose.

Hope that helps.

200US$s, hell even I would take one for that price. They aren't on par with a BAR, so you will likely find that. But they can be good for a 100round a year type gun.
I used to abuse them, vicously, but if you kept them CLEAN they worked well.
Clean it religously, keep the inside of the receiver clean, the lug areas clean, and clean the trigger group once in a while. Don't let them get gritty feeling.
Also keep the inside of the mag clean.
200$s, you did good there.

in my experience,7400's shoot fairly well if taken care of-I have seen too many come in[we were a Remington repair depot] that were shot and 'put away wet'-causing rust/pitting in the chamber, that caused no end of extraction problems-you don't mention the caliber but; for some reason;the .308 versions seemed to have more/more difficult problems than their .30-06 brethren-corrosive mil-surp ammo??-never did get a definative handle on it-for $200 though, you can afford to take a flyer-as mentionned by others though-KEEP IT CLEAN! :D

SC..........

Oh, Touché good sir :p
Listen "Stroker", if you come accross one in 308, hell, even a 742 in 308, for 200$s, think of your old buddy eh
I have had a hankering to drive one into the ground for quite some time, and trust me, mine NEVER jammed 8) , its all down to knowing what your doing :p

My friend owned a 7400 for years (30.06) and never had a problem. Some of the older 742's had locking lug problems. The term "Jam-O-Matic" is unjust IMHO. It is imperative (just like for any semi) that you keep the action (remove the drift pins) and clean the action and trigger assembly. Use consistent ammo and DO NOT mix'n'match. Some semi's are picky on ammo. Most jams happen with ammo that lacks the power to cycle the action. R-P ammo works excellent, so does federal. If you use hand-loads (the best) spend some time at the range and make sure your baby like'em. If those 150 rounds are mixed - DO NOT use for hunting.

If you want to increase the lock time and accuracy you could do a trigger job. Is it necessary? Not really.

Yea, I shot one once......it jammed so much I got pissed off and shot it.

Seriously, I had a 742 in 308 that jammed every once in a while. It had nice wood, highly figured on the butt. I sold it, kinda wish I still had it.

So, have you fired it yet?

Yeah, along with the rest of the money to complete the transaction.

Actually I really like the rifle, and it's quite accurate too.

RePete.
