do hi-viz sights aid in shooting or create distraction

Everyone sees "lead" differently because of variations in swing speed. If you shoot a swing through method you might not see any lead because it is already built into the swing.

Good point Claybuster. I'd have to agree with that.

I should have qualified what I said earlier with the fact that I shoot skeet using a sustained lead. All though there are times when I do use swing thru when I get beaten by a high 2 or a low 6. In those cases I don't really see a lead either....it all happens so fast...when I see my barrels clear the target, the trigger is pulled. So no....in that split second I can't see a lead really on those targets either. Hell....even when they don't beat me and I do "sustain lead" them, it's for such a short period of time, it's next to impossible to gauge a distance between the barrels and the target.

What I described earlier is most applicable to the other targets on the field where you have more time to "gauge" the distances....or space between target and barrels.

Last year, while duck hunting in Manitoba, I was having a very hard time hitting any birds. I realized after allowing a bunch of birds to continue their Southward migration, that my eye was constantly being drawn back to the Hi-Viz sights I had installed on my 870. I quickly popped the sight off and proceeded to start wacking them pretty good. My vote is for the plain old beads.

I like them because they are one of the fastest selling aids in my store. Do I use one NEVER. It is a gimmick as everything else, but there are shooters that swear by them.

The reality of the matter is that if you have proper gun fit you do not need to focus on the sight but should be concentrating and focusing on the target that you plan on breaking. Most good shooters do not see the bead on their guns.

I have on many occassions assisted senior shooters in installing Hi-Viz sites on their guns to assist them in the bead/target relationship alot better for them. Their confidence in being able to see a bead and shooting at the target seems to increase and therefore it becomes a good aid for them.

You will get mixed reviews on this one, as it works for some and not required for others.

well, now the follow up

i replaced the fibre optic red bead with the white bradley.

scores went down. i realise that i was actually using the red sight to point at the target and that was not possible today with the white bead.

i have put the fibre optic back on today and ready for next week, lets see if it is the bead or just poor shooting.

regards
