Do I need an ATT for a >500fps airgun pistol (Webley Tempest)? & Other legalese

Hey guys,

I'm sure this has been asked, but I can't find an answer. Maybe we need a sticky?

My "friend" is willing to sell me a Webley Tempest for $1... ;)

I've been told that these are are >500fps so you need a license to possess one. Is this true (about the FPS of a Webley Tempest, not the license part)?

Does it need to be registered?

Is a >500fps pistol considered a non-restricted weapon, or a restricted weapon? If it's restricted does that mean that I need an ATT and I can only shoot it at the range? That would be very, very lame. :jerkit:

I want to keep things legal, but it's useless to me as a plinker if I need to go to the range and can't shoot it at cans in the bush.

Thanks!

If the barrel length is less then 4", not only is it restricted but it will be prohibited! I do not recall any Tempest's being that fast however. Check with "Webley" and see if they made such a beast, otherwise your friend is blowing smoke!

Barrel is way longer than 4"

Looks like the manual calls it 420fps but other places it says it's rated "up to 500fps". So I'm not sure what to believe. Since it's a 30 year old gun I would have to say the chances of it shooting over 500fps is quite low. I guess a chrono is the only way to know for sure.

It looks like this, in case that helps.

Thanks a ton!

Just for sake of argument. If it was 1000fps would it require an ATT? In other words does >500fps turn it into a non-restricted gun or a restricted gun?

I've got the Hurricane, with the right pellet it can and does exceed 500fps. Not by lots, but enough. I too am not selling it. But have always been curious about it's legality as is the OP.Look for promeathius (sp) pellets. Pretty deadly.

It must be 500fps and 5.7 Joules energy. This prevents an airgun be classed as a firearm when using very light pellets.

Beeman USA made the Tempest and Huricane as well under contract. There was a Kit available to replace springs and seals to up the power to well over 500 fps for both the .177 and .22 models. Should your gun have had the replacement seals and spring it could well be over 500fps other wise your looking at 420fps or there abouts.
