Do I need ATT to buy restricted firearms in BC?

Hi All,
Long time lurker, first time poster :D

I just received my RPAL in mail (exactly 2 weeks after the online status became processed) and I can't wait to get shooting. So my question is, do I need a LTATT to buy a pistol in BC? And do I need a range/club membership to get a LTATT?

I did read the "ATT what you need to know" thread but the BC section was last updated like 5 years ago:confused:

Thanks for your answers, guys. Looks like a trip to the range is a good idea. So back to my first question, if I go into a gun shop with only my RPAL, would I be able to buy a pistol and have the transfer process started before I get my LTATT?

Yes. The CFO will want to see a club membership but it is not the law. Fight it if you want. The CFO will issue a STATT for you to transport the pistol from the gun store to your home. You can apply for a LTATT at the same time.

"...able to buy a pistol and have the transfer process..." In theory, yes. Most CPFO's have decided that you must be a club member since the only place you can shoot restricted firearms is on an approved range. It's a 'policy' thing. No law says that. It's what happens when civil servants are allowed to make law by regulation.

Many have discussed the commitment to a range whether you need it or not...it's a gray area.
Like a friend of mine, he no longer belongs to a range, with family and work he only makes it out a handfull of times a year...doesn't justify a $140-$180 annual membership fee.
So instead he drops into whatever range his buddies belongs to and pays a day fee.

Back to the original question. When you go to the gun store, you can purchase the firearm. The gun store will take your information, including your range membership. They will then submit this info to the CFC. The CFC will then process the transfer and will issue an ATT to transport the gun from the store to your residence. You can then go to the store and pick up your firearm and transport it home. This process is NOT normally a one day occurance. You may already know this, but I am trying to let you know the process that I went through with my first restricted, so that you are not disappointed or upset when you wind up leaving the store without anything after you have paid for it.

Not sure where you are in BC.

You can get Silver Core Club annual membership for $15 (last I checked) and that will be good enough to apply for LTATT. LTATT will be issued for 5 years. Make sure it's good for all approved ranges, gunsmiths, border crossings and for every day, 24/7.
Then you can start looking around and decide on the range to go to and to join. Or you can go to any range on day pass.

You'll need to prove you are a club member again only when you apply for another LTATT when it's time to renew it.

Good advice from CeeZer. To add, ask for all approved ranges in Western Canada (BC, Yukon, Alberta, Sask & Manitoba). I did and got it but I will add I am a IPSC competitor so that may have been a factor. Never hurts to ask and get them to explain in writing why not if refused.

Oh well I'm heading to PCDHFC tomorrow to sign up. Annual membership 140 / day pass 20 = 7 visits per year and I think I should be able to make it :)

In that case, call Silver Core, get your membership (for $15), they will email you the proof in 10mins if you pay with credit card, apply for LTATT and enjoy it for next 5 years.
LTATT in BC is usually issued for BC and Yukon only.

+1 on that!!! I'm a drop in only guy, so that was the only real move for me.

You'll need an ATT to go from home to range...get the pdf from CFC and fill it out...it's free.

Here's a link to help you out.

When you buy a pistol, a temp ATT will be issued to go from store to home.

From my experience the BC CFO would not approve my first transfer until i had a longterm ATT

the 2nd and 3rd pistols were approved within a day the seller was shocked at how quickly it was approved! (he was in ONT)
i had to provide proof of membership as well, and it has to be renewed yearly otherwise the ATT is VOID(says so in the conditions) must be member in good standing(from what i remember)
