I picked up a 9mm sizing die so i can use a few of the billion cast bullets my dad had lying around for 9mm. I completely forgot to get gas checks and am a few hours away from any store that sells reloading equipment.

So the question is do I really need gas checks for light 9mm plinking loads?

Thanks.

Not likely.

Gas checks are typically used for cast bullets that are propelled to over 1300-1400 FPS. I highly doubt you'd get that velocity with a light plinking load (out of a handgun anyway).

Also depends on the bullet. If the bullets that you have were designed for gas checks, you might have some problems without a gas check (might, not will). What kind of bullets - (Pictures?)

Lol , i did the same thing when i picked up some cast 40sw projectiles , i got about half way back home from where i went and "oh #### , do i need gaslocks" , i pulled over took a peek in the reloading manual i also bought and finally was able to relax as i would have had to turn around on the 401 and drive back about an hour..

If the mold/bullet is "cut" for a gas check, use one.......If you buy cast bullets and they require the GC, they should be already installed as part of the sizing/lubing process, that's what you're paying for.
As someone else mentioned, I am not aware of any 9mm molds/bullets that are cut for the GC, none of mine are.
Bullets meant for higher speeds and higher pressures such as serious bullets for big game hunting tend to be made with the gas check.
Does any of this make sense??

I am pretty sure they are cut for checks. They are the same cast bullets that my dad casts for his .38/.357 loads, Im just using the .355 die instead of the .358(?) die he uses. so I would imagine they are set up for checks yeah?
