Do some dealers get the transfers done faster?

Well it sure feels like it; I bought a handgun a week ago at a local gun store and the transfer is still at CFO. Couple of years ago had I to wait couple of weeks when I bought a handgun from another small dealer from BS…

I know some people will say that’s nothing , but the last 3 restricted transfers all took 2 days (incl one a month ago); two were bought from one of the ‘big boys’ that advertise on CGN and another from SIR...

Is it me or does it seem like some dealers get the transfers done a bit faster than others

No, we all get treated the same by the CFC. However if you ask for a rush transfer usually the CFC will oblige.

My Eagle Arms lower took a day and a half from Wolverine, and my P226 took 2 days from Target Sports.

how come some dealers ask for palce of birth, does it really speed up the process?

When done by phone the salesman will confirm your identification by your picture on pal and other id. When salesman does an on line transfer which is usually faster, your place of birth is used like a pin number.

IM Lugger: When transfering restricted or prohib, the transfer is done by telephone. If the person doing the transfer needs to speak to you they ask your place of birth to confirm that you are you.

I once had a buddy who owns a local shop where I was purchasing a Colt Gold Cup National Match phone in and tell the CFC that I had a match to shoot in that saturday (this was on a friday). The transfer went through in just over 4 hours.:D

I have to disagree about all dealers being treated the same. I have purchased 17 handguns in the last 2 months mostly from just two dealers. One dealer always gets transfers done faster than the other, usually one day. the other dealer sometimes a week or more.

My last pistol was a Ruger KP345 that I picked up at auction, I was out the door in 3 hours... They made prior arrangements with the CFO and had them at the phone on a Saturday. Smooth process.

In Ontario it's the luck of the draw depending on how many transfer applications they have in the que and whether the CFO is at full staff.

I've waited as little 2 days on a private sale and 5 weeks on transfer from a major retailer. I don't think big operations get their transfers faster than anyone else.

Bought 5 guns the past few months;

2 at TSE, both over 5-7 days
3 at Wholesale, 24-48 hours

I don't think it's the place, rather the person who calls is it, and who they get on the line.

Not all transfers are the same. Sometimes non restricted transfers are referred to the province for review (for various random reasons), and this can drag things out for a long period of time.
Any dealer can ask that the transfer be expedited, but if we all do it all the time none would be done faster. If you are in a rush, let your dealer know, it is as easy as that.

so what do they do at the CFO? do they run some kind of background checks or do they just wait a few weeks and just hit the 'approve button' when they feel like it?

Some firearms get flagged for various reasons. Some applicants get flagged for various reasons. If the firearm is brand new, it is more probable that the problem or the reason for the flag is with the applicant. All restricted and prohibs go to the CFO and if there is no problem with firearm or applicant it gets processed when the CFO gets to it. I have had two purchases go to the CFO, both were with previously owned firearms. I know a few people, who have their application go to the CFO each and every time. These people usually know the reason or suspect the reason. If there are no problems and you apply on a quiet day it will be quick and if there are no problems and they are busy it may take a while. I just consigned a bunch of guns. One went to the CFO. It was the same one that went to the CFO years ago when I bought it.:D

Local dealer I deal with here usually gets non-restricted done while I wait. Restricted and prohibs in 2-3 business days only 'cause they go over to the BC CFO for the final solution.... er, I mean approval. :p

He gets the ATT's faxed to him so it's a no brainer when you go to pick it up, too.
