this morning, I woke up too early. nothing to do, so I went onto YouTube, watched a few clips about Mauser assembly and disassembly. brought my Mauser 96, follow what the videos taught. it was my first time ever doing it,but I made it through. I disassemble the action and put it back on.

now I wonder if I really need to buy books like gun digest. videos show more details and are free

I personally like having the books even though the Internet is such a useful tool. Most of the time I go to the books first, and if I don't have or can not find what I need, I then go to the net.

Both have their place, I for one will always prefer books.

I like having the books. The videos on YouTube may not always be readily available. That and I find skipping around to find certain sections is a lot easier in a paper version. I still watch the videos in order to get better ideas of what to expect.

The internet is a wealth of misinformation. Not only do the often get it wrong, but the info that is provided can be very superficial. The "author" has no obligation to get his/her facts right, wheras books at least undergo an editorial review. Books will always be my first choice.

YouTube isn't available at the camp (no electricity) and there isn't room on my bench for the computer.
Like 9.3mauser said there is wealth of misinformation on the internet. I have between 2,500 and 3,000 books in my office and I go to the books for more information on a subject. I find the internet gives you the Readers Digest version.
I have a series of original Winchester books from the 1950s & 60s they are "Sequence of Take-Down and Assembly Operations"
They are sketches of all of the steps required to take down and assemble each of the most popular Winchester firearms.
They have helped me numerous times over the years.
If a person doesn't know what the proper name of a part or procedure you are looking for its a tough job to get what you want off the internet.

Agreed, same here. However,;) even though I'm from the pre-metric and slide rule era:p, even with my limited computer skills I find this electronic age places access to a whole world of information at your fingertips. Still, for info from men and days gone by, on rainy days like today and when all the reloading is caught up, I often head to the assortment of books on the book shelves in the den for some quiet reading, and reflection.

As example, after having met the man twice in the mid 70s, picking up and thumbing through one of his books takes me right back to those meetings:D. The way the dialogue is laid out in his books is just the way he spoke.

.... Well, I'm an avid reader ! And so is the rest of the Family. In my case, it's common to have three books, or more, on the go simultaneously. And I use both the Kobo plus, both hard and soft cover books. "YOU-TUBE" is a handy tool if one needs a visual explanation, and along with the Internet, a good source for information and reference. BUT, there's nothing that beats reading a good book in a warm bed ! ....... David K
