Do you support your rifle on the magazine?

Damn right, I support my AR on whatever is available during matches, training and target shooting...I have never had a problem doing so. No Operational experience though...

I shot a C-7 quite a bit in three years in the infantry and always rested on whatever I could. We were specifically instructed NOT TO rest on our mags as it would change our POI, but I thought that was crap and did it anyways and everything was fine. I qualified as Marksman (highest level on PWT) every time I did my Personal Weapons Test, and fired thousands of rounds this way. Why - Anything that steadies you is fair game!

My service experience was similar to Northman's. We were told not to rest our mags on the ground, but plenty of people did for the extra stability. I was a good troop back then, and didn't use the mag for support.

Now that I am shelling out for my AR and mags, I don't have a problem with resting the mag on the ground. I don't put the full weight of the rifle's front end on it, but I do put some on. It seems to be a bit more stable.

IF you've got a really sloppy mag, I guess it might move the top of the mag inside the mag well and thus affect the chambering of the next round, but I have yet to have that happen to me.

One of the service rifle folks would probably be good to ask about this. They can probably tell you more about accuracy with a service rifle under range conditions than anyone else.

I do not.
I actually use 20 round mags vice 30 rounders so that I can get lower in the prone position, closer to my personal centre of ballence and get a more correct sling position and proper sling tension. A good sling, slung properly is far more stable for accurate shooting and a mag rested on the ground, slightly back from the centre of balance. For those people capable of shooting 1 min groups with an AR at 100m, using a sling and not a rest, you will notice a defined difference in impact with the use of the mag as a rest. This is actually caused by the bolt not riding properly in the upper reciever if the mag well is loose enough so that the bolt can touch the mag as it travels. If this happens, then the bolt is not getting an allround thrust from the mainspring and the buffer as it is being pushed slightly up and drags a wee bit and therefore causes inconsistent bolt/barrel lock up that is slightly different with each shot. As we all know consistancy is the secret to accuracy! For those in a real world situation, anything that allows you to kill the enemy better is a good thing and I don't think good groups are what count.

I rest it on the ground.

no, but my SBR is short enough that its not a big deal..maybe for a longer upper.. Sides with the 10 rounders with pull tabs its about the same height as the grip..

Yes I rest it on the ground. Always have and always will. Go to CFSAC and you'll see that absolutely everyone does it. Never had a stoppage that could be blamed on shooting this way either.

And for the chap who likes to sling up; yes it's more stable but the force that you're putting on the barrel will shift your point of impact away from your point of aim. Unless conditions are exactly the same each and every time, your shot placement will never be consistent. Disregard this if you have a free float set up.

Again, sling tension, the same tension. I manage to get the same tension 90% of the time. 7 x 10's is a better score that 10 x 3!

I think it was demonstrated awhile ago by KevinB that the mag is not touching the BC. The change of POI is due to tension on the barrel by the sling. When the rifle is rested on the mag, the barrel is free floated and therefore the POI is different from the slinged position.

In the real work, most are probably so frigging tired already when the SHTF. Slinging it and doing a perfect prone with all the stuff and a plate on you chest is probably a non-option to start with.

Interest thing, years ago there was a CF recruting poster with a guy holding a C7....and it was very clear his magainze floor plate had come off 3/4 way out.:runaway:

Definately put it on the ground. As leg says all the heavy hitters at CFSAC do it and never have any problems.ANything to help.I'll take 10 4's over 7 5's anyday.Remember only hits count!

Thanks guys, those are the type of comments I'm looking for.

We covered this a few months ago - do a search.

So I searched again last night for a while. I didn't find it, but I did stumble upon an old, long thread about the Infantry Society of Alberta. After reading all about Colt Silver and his mom's back 40, I crawled into bed 3 hours late. My girlfriend asked "WTF where you doing for 3 hours?". I didn't know how to explain so I told her I was surfing ####...

So for the sake of my relationship, can you point me in the right direction? Hook a brother up?
