Gentlemen,

...chance that the US Military would go back to a round equal to or surpass the 30:06 for standard issue to all US combat troops. I know that it would be a heavy load. However, your fathers or grandfathers carried the load in WW2 to just about every Nation. You would carry a heavy load again but what a punch your rifle would have.
Just my .02 cents

Thanks again

i agree no chance- we're too far down the 223 road ,and there's always somebody trying to reinvent the wheel- however ,that said, the 308 is a more likely candidate, close to the 06, given the limitations that most folks impose on the garand type actions( 170 grain slugs or less)- now if we were to re-design the rifle to eat 180's like 150's with modern steels or composites, that's a whole other ball game-

Heavy Military Rounds

The US won't go back to the 06 but in the book Black Rifle II, there is information about the US experimenting with a new 6.8mm round as a replacement for the 5.56mm round. They were sticking with the M16 lower and replacing the upper with a 6.8mm barrel and receiver. I think H&K is one of the arms manufacturers that were working on the upgrade.

i suspect that the next rifle round to be mass adopted by the US or Canada would have to be enough of a leap forward to justify the BILLIONS it would cost to convert.

Something caseless like the HK G11, but in a more capable caliber would get my vote. Or possibly rail gun technology... IF they ever perfect it.

You're Chris Bartocci? I never would have guessed...

Until we get room temperature superconductors and a form of battery with much higer engery density, better put your money on caseless.

We never should have left 7.62X55 except for special applications...eg. cqb/mout. the new 6.5/6.8 mm rounds are interesting....

Hey,

You could call it the M14.:D

Well with the focus going more to CQB, there is a percieved need for heavier and somewhat slower / shorter range carbines.

Perhaps they should look at reissuing the Thompson :)

I don't think you will ever see the 30-06 return, perhaps for marksman (like the M14) but for general issue its too powerfull.

The 5.56 is also a fairly fast round, small, but fast. Perhaps 30 carbine might be a good chambering for CQB.

But I really want a plasma cannon or a rail gun :) perhaps an over under combination fo the two :D

I'd bet the next thing will be caseless rounds and electronic ignition. You could carry a lot more ammo around if you didn't have to worry about brass. Rate of fire could also be insane - you don't have to worry about extracting anything.

Take a look at the HK G11

The HK G11 is dead for a reason.

I think the next round if we ever change will be the 6.5/6.8 . It has the best of both worlds(5.56 & 7.62). It packs more punch(7.62), and it has a better BC therefor better trajectory, faster also (5.56).

But really, this is just reinventing the wheel. The swedes had it right with the 6.5x55

And the M96 is longer than an AKM so you can bayonet people before they bayonet you.

It's not dead, it's just sleeping ;)

But I'm not specifically referring to the G11. The caseless concept hasn't gone away. Google 'caseless ammunition' to see what I mean.
