Do you use a shooting mat/drag bag?

Hey all,

I am currently looking in to getting into serious long range, so apologies if this should go in to the precision section...

I was wondering if anyone uses a shooting mat for say shooting non-restricted out in the woods when you are hunting or just plinking:

If so, do you use a shooting mat or shooting mat/drag bag combo, or do you use something else? (I was thinking about using a yoga mat as a cheap replacement).

Do you like what you use or would you rather have something else?

Was it cheap?

Was it is easy to find in Canada, or did you have to spend 6 months online to find the damn thing.

Thanks for any input you have :)

I honestly use one of my old Scouts Canada woolie blankets as a shootin pad to lay down on.

Very comfy but man does it ever like to bring eerything you layed on with it.

I shoot long range with a 338/378 Weatherby loaded with 300 grain Berger hybrids which is slightly larger and hotter than a 338 Lapua magnum. I have used a Bulls Bag to 600 yards while shooting a 10 inch gong. What is more important here than the type of rest U use while shooting is correct position, trigger control, breath control, and rock solid stability. U want a platform that is going to reduce rifle harmonics as much as possible. I find that a ordinary tripod works just as well as a good heavy sandbag. Prone position is the most stable and most accurate generally speaking, U can not get more solid than good old mother earth. A good shooting mat is very important as is judging the wind, altitude, barometric pressure, humidity, and if all the planets are lined up. Get ready to spend lots of money and trigger time because long range shooting is addictive. I would suggest that U very quickly become a re loader. The quality of ammunition that is generally available for purchase is not up to much beyond 500 yards or so. U will want to control everything and everything depends on ammo as a start. The rest of it, such as a good 2000 dollar scope, expensive rock solid rings and bases, such as Near, (if U closely look at my avatar U will see Near rings and bases, they cost about $500.00) a glass bedded rifle and blue printed action can run into big bucks depending on how far U want to shoot
