Just wondering if History channel or anyone ever made a documentary on either of these plants.

I'd love to learn more about them and figured seeing footage if any exists would be a good place to start.

The World at War series from the early 70's shows some Russian weapons manufacturing, like T-34 Tanks, etc. Maybe try youtube as well.

I was in Simonov in the eighties. if memory serves, there is a tank factory there, along with a lot of other industries. The guild for the manufacture of traditional painted wood artwook (~Hoklama) is also there - probably the most important industry now.
One of the more lasting memories was trying the beer there - absolutely horrible, had to strain it through my teeth!

You have to bear in mind that many of these places were deemed "military cities" back in the day, with very strict security. Heck in some places you needed to apply for a pass to get out of the city. In the one I was in, the only hotel was owned and operated by the KGB...

Howdy

History Channel's Tales of the gun series, in the guns of the Russian military episode. They talk about when Tula was founded, they show a bit of the inside of the factory, and they show some of what's inside the Tula museum.

But it's only a small bit. They do talk about how the AK factories can't sell their guns now because they flooded the marked in the communist days:p
