Hey guys,

I am curious what people think about having a norinco 1911 for IPSC??

Any experience would be much appreciated!

I am poor so i can only afford the norinco right now, the 1911's fit pretty good in my hands, and Ive always wanted a 1911. Ne ways i was thinking of upgrading it with gunsmithing work/parts as i went.

If you can only afford norinco, then IPSC is not for you. The ammo costs will far surpass the gun cost in a matter of months.

Very true. OP, reloading is a very good idea if you are shooting any of the practical pistol games, especially in .45ACP. Don't forget that after you buy the gun you need a holster, belt, mag pouch(es), extra mags and other gear. IDPA is less equipment intensive than IPSC and would be a better choice for lower cost shooting, but none of it is cheap. The best thing you could do for reducing your costs would be to shoot 9mm, it is significantly cheaper than .40S&W or .45ACP and commercial reloads are available from a couple of sources.

As far as the 1911 pistols, they should be fine for IPSC. One of Gunnar's tuned 1911's would be a great start as an IPSC/IDPA gun.

Edit - I see you are in Calgary, PM me and and you could come out to the Olds range for a practice shoot with the IDPA group to see what it is all about.

Agree 100% with previous posters.

About reloading, if you want to shoot a lot without spending a lot of money, reloading and casting your own bullets/projectiles is the only way to go. Reloading and casting take time so only you can decide how to balance your cost and time.

I might add that it has always been the shooter not the gun. Annie Oakley did not have a Wilson 1911 pistol.

Of course the gun must be reliable, with a decent trigger and should be reasonably accurate, which a Norkie can be. Shooting, specially the action games, is a mental as much as it is a physical game. Once you are proficient with the handling and shooting basics of your 1911, and are physically conditioned enough, mental preparation and your focus during your runs, are the biggest contributors to your success or failure on the course.

I don't know how matches are run these days, or if the courses of fire are disclosed before the shoot. When we were active in IPSC 20 years ago, my buddy and I would run each course in our heads countless times, we'd set-up up a similar course at our home range and run the course dry, several times before firing a single shot. That way we have a pretty good idea of what to do during the meet itself.

I know you only mentioned 1911's but as an alternative take a look at the Norinco copy of the CZ 75/85. I have been told they work really quite well. 9MM is a lot less expensive than .45acp by a lot and you could play in both IPSC and IDPA with the gun. The Norinco copy if the Sig 226 is another option in 9MM. A nylon Uncle Mikes holster can be hand for around $15. and for IDPA you don't need a mag holder right away. You will need three mags, though - four is ideal. For around $450. you should be good to go

Drop by the Olds range when the ATHL is having a shoot. According to their calander their next match is April 25th. Guys there shoot both IPSC and IDPA and I know they will be more than happy to share information with you. I would be surprised if you don't get offered an opportunity to try their guns while you are there. Ask for Mike J. or Joe T. Both shoot both sports and are experience shooters.

K this is good, I Have much to learn, but it's so lame I'm at uni for another 2-3 weeks!!!!!! I really want to see a competition! I think I'm getting a little prematurely excited tho I still have to challenge the restricted, play the waiting game with the ol gov, then buy my setup and get my blackbadge course done lol. That will at the very least take the summer!! Haha I just like talking about it :). If I could scrape up the cash, do they make a cz 97b in 9mm? I know there's a .45, but 9 would be better if it is cheaper.

Thanks guys. I'm also just geting into reloading too so that's a good start!

But I have a fair bit of trigger time on various pistols and have been taught by a friend in the USPSA how to properly hold and shoot a pistol so that's a start. And I'm told I'm not a bad shot! :D

The 97B is the CZ .45acp pistol. CZ makes several versions of the 75B platform in 9MM and .40cal. The 75B is the basic pistol design in 9MM and .40cal.
