Is a pistol grip buttstock the way to go fro action shooting a shotgun?. I want to replace the wood on my 870 with something like the shure shot stock that remington has. Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.

No.

Having used a Benelli M4 in many 3-gun matches I can attest to this...
I switched to an M2 this year and find it far more pointable and faster to reload.
I find the pistol grip gets in the way especially when making quick transitions...

Pistol grip brings nothing to the game.

mossberg 500

I switched my Mossberg 500 with a pistol grip/extendable butt stock. Due to the angle of the stock and only having a front bed sight on my barrel, when I mounted the shotgun I was shooting high when I looked down the barrel. I went back to the wooden stock.

mossbergs with pistol grips are a non starter

I used to use an 870 with speedfeed pistol grip stock. Now I use a 590A1 with straight stock.

I actuallly found the pistolgrip more pointable for me.

As with everything individual results may vary....

I've started to look around at the major matches...
FB3G, BRM3G, Ozark3G, FNH... Etc...

I was usually the only guy running a pistol gripped shotgun.

Only "big name" I've noticed with a PG stock is Taran Butler.
Not sure if he still runs one.

Field stocks are normally more naturally pointable than a PG.

There isn't much that is normal or natural about Stormbringer so it would make sense that he likes the PG.
:)

I dunno, I just started 3 gun shooting this year and am using a Mossberg 500 tactical with ghost rings, I can't seem to miss.... and believe me its not the shooter! Sights in quick and the reloads are pretty fast. As with everything practise makes perfect I suppose. I would say 85% of the shooters in my club shoot PG's.

There, my 2 cents are on the table....

Take a look at the Mesa Tactical Urbino stock with the limbsaver and cheekrest....costs a pretty penny but it's actually got a really good feel to it an I find it fairly instinctive when driving it between targets...
