Does anyone do barrel indexing?

One of my new M-14s came with the front sight wayyy to the right, so I am worried about a possible barrel indexing problem. (My other one is a bit to the left - is that an indexing issue as well?)

Is there anyone who does barrel reindexing so that the front sight is automatically centered / zeroed without being way to the right or left? I have seen instructions on how to do it but I would feel more comfortable if it were done by an experienced person or a professional. I am willing to pay to get it done.

I just got my M-14S and I had the same problem with the front sight. It was way over on the left of the dovetail. Whatever. I just started shooting and rounds were landing 5" to the right. At 50m! The range remedy for that was to adjust the rear sight to the left too. Then it was all ok.

Until I got home and started cleaning.

Then I noticed that the bloody front sight was loose. The grub screw was hardly torqued, so the front sight slid with the slightest nudge. Grrr! It hardly matters anyway since I'm changing to a SOCOM style sight. Still a little irksome.

Regardless, I love my new rifle.

I know that Ellwood Epps does it and I am sure Shooters Choice, Gobles and William's will do it too.

I see that you are in S. Ontario. Bring it up to Collingwood and I can turn you around in 5 minutes (as long as the rifle is stripped down to the barreled action). The actual indexing is a 5 minute job. Setting up the vise, jaw blocks, parallels and having ONE beer takes a bit longer. ha ha ha

If you really want to part with your money, the suggested gunsmith shops in the previous thread are good. In the past, I've only charged a deluxe cheeseburger with onions, mushrooms, and bacon. yuk, yuk That's why they call me "Hungry".

PM me...

Have a look through your rear sight and align your front sights. Everything look level ? Good ? Bad ? Indifferent ?

If your front sight is canted or tilted to the left or tilted to the right, your barrel is NOT indexed properly so that the sights are top dead center. The Kommunists have not quite figured this out. Mainly because they won't pay $ 8.00 for my 2 disc CD set that I'm in the process of burning 100 sets before I fly off to Italy next Saturday 15 July 06. Maybe someone should direct the Kommies to Skullboy's sticky's at the top of this forum so that they can understand how to index a barrel .... it's not rocket science.

Correcting it takes a week or 2 to ship the barreled reciever to, 30 minutes to set up in the vise with jaw blocks and appropriately clamped parallels. And then finally, about 2 minutes to jump up and down on the reciever wrench, until the parallels line up. How to use parallels is well outlined in my next double disc DVD set, soon to be released in August when I'm back from Tuscanny.

Hope this helps,
Barney

The barrel has sights, gas system mounted on it. It should be screwed into the receiver so that the sights are top dead centre, and the gas system aligned. It should be properly torqued. Sometimes the 305s' barrels are not screwed in properly, so the front sight appears to be rotated. Correction is a matter of screwing the barrel in or out until everything is true. Hungry mentionned parallels - one is placed on a reference point on the receiver, the other on the flat on the sight base. Instead of eyeballing the installation, when the parallels line up, the barrel is correctly indexed.
Personal opinion, but I don't think that any of these rifles should be leaving the factory without the barrels being properly indexed. Putting the barrels in properly, in the factory, with the appropriate jigs and fixtures should be a no brainer. Suggests sloppy, indifferent workmanship. As Hungry pointed out, its a 5 minute job for him to correct it.

OK...last night I checked my M305...
what can I say??? I have a problem, BUT.....as far as I understand, the barrel indexin makes sanse ONLY if you are going to use open site.
on the other hand, if you use a scope, the incorrect indexin will not effect the accuracy.....(but it`s good to have it fixed ;) )
to Hungry: am I right???? or the problem is more complicated than I can imagine????
thanks
regards

The slightly off indexing that you report is benign in terms of headspace and shooting safety. That means it really does not matter... until you decide to shoot ONLY with iron sights... that may drive you crazy. I know it drives ME nuts.

If you are scoping your rifle, don't even bother re-indexing it or even losing sleep like I do.

Most of you M14 lovers seem to be CHOPMOD'ding your M14's into carbines with extra punch !!

Cheers,
Barney

If the indexing is WAY off, the piston is going to be hitting the operating rod off centre. This isn't going to affect functionning, but it may affect accuracy.

as far as I can see, on my M305 the pistol punches the op.rod right in the centre... :)
but I have light off-centering of my front site...
still able to make about 1MOA with open site using Portug. FMJ Ammo :)
hunting ammo - about 2.5 inches at 200m, the group is at the left, 1 inch :/
but still, it`s plinking fun gun.

for Hungry: last night I lost my sleep because of "barrel re-indexing: ;)
