Does anyone here actually hunt with buckshot?

i've taken one deer with buckshot, i'd say it worked good. granted range was something like 15 yards.

Actually (unless I'm misunderstanding you) the more 0's, the larger. 000 buck is larger than 00 buck...

How many zero's do you put in front of this load :D

I have read many times that 00buckshot is the first choice of PHs in Africa for tracking a wounded leopard, tells you something about it's close range effectiveness. 12 or 15 .33cal. pellets will make your deer get sick and die very quickly at inside 40 yds.

there was some nice 12g 3" mag Federal Power-Shok - 15 pellets of 00 buck goodness - on sale at Wally World™ a while back and i picked up about 200 of them for when the zombies come.

does anyone actually use these for hunting? if i use a shotgun for deer ill always use slugs, for bear its 3" mag brenneke slugs.
i dont think i would rely on them for bear defense unless it was one round of buck followed by brenneke slugs... the only thing they seem good for is zombies.
i dont doubt it kills things - i touched off a few at the cottage and they take down small-medium size trees, like a 15 round burst from a 9mm submachinegun.... but cant think of any situation to use buckshot where something else wouldnt do the job much better.

anyone actually hunt deer with these? and i dont mean 'one time 25 years ago i took a shot at a deer with buckshot'... i mean if you are going deer hunting you actually choose to take a shotgun with buckshot.
what are the advantages to it?

I have taken many black bears with 12 gauge buckshot, one shot is usually all it takes providing you are close enough.!! Slugs work better further out and buckshot works better close up. My son got his first deer this year with my cut down o/u. One shot with 2&3/4 #0 buck (12 pellets) and there is steaks in the freezer.

How far is it cut down?

As far as protection from bears... at what distance would one normally engage a bear anyway? If Im setting up my tent or just wandering around in the bush, at what distance would I be best advised to shoot the bastard and at what distance am I better off just leaving them alone? I'd wanna do everything possible in order to avoid killing one... but not at the cost of my own well-being of course.

I believe the minimum pellet count for shotgun is 8 in the shotgun only area.I think they did their homework on this issue.

According to the owner of Dixie Slugs, their tri-ball ammo is legal for use in buckshot only zones in the US. Don't know if it's the same in Canada.

shot another deer this year with 9 pellets of 00 buck...for me the deer has to be within 20 yards before I will shoot based on the imp cyl in my deer barrel..if I had a full then 30/35 yards I would shoot.....the deer I did kill with buckshot was only 20 yards anyway

I recently tested some 3 inch mag 00 buck (15 pellets) out of my Rem 870.
The 870 has an 18 inch barrel with an improved cylinder bore, I got 9 pellets into a big dinner plate at 30 yards.
Definitely dead meat whatever you shoot .......

Penetration?

That's great...but..what kind of penetration can be expected at that range?
But I too agree with tha Federal 3" mag's. I shot some 000 bucks outta my Mossy 590 @ 25yds well lets just say that ten of those .36 cal lead shot would definately do some justice on a deer or bear given the range is suitable.
And the recoil was manageable too.
