Does anyone in Victoria BC know much about svt-40's???

Use a mallet or a 2x4 to get the bolt open and keep opening the gas valve until the bolt operates and cycles in a new round properly. Look for the SVT40 sticky in Red Rifles for a very comprehensive post of how to strip and re-assemble your rifle c/w good photos and diagrams. Find a proper gas adjustment tool if you don't already have one.

Thanks guys, right now i got er stripped and cleaned just struggling with removing the trigger group.
Sometimes, the guard release may need a little help with a punch and a hammer but be sure the gate at the rear is open at the 9 o'clock position. On all my SVT, i can push the release with the cleaning rod, never had any difficulties.

I had a bit of trouble getting mine out; it required a bit of force. Putting it back in can be difficult too. I had to use a vise (with rubber)... There is probably a better way.

Is this a new (to you) rifle? They seem to need a lot of cleaning to get them operating properly.
