Does anyone know anything about German formations in WW1?

Does anyone know anything about German formations in WW1? I recently picked up this 1916 DWM which I'm told is named to the 100th Regiment, the front-strap is stamped 100.R.3.4. - So I see a 100th (1st Royal Saxon) Life Grenadiers formed April 30, 1670 garrisoned in Dresden and part of XII army Corps (I guess in WW1), but that's all I can find. Would this be the correct unit? What does the whole thing mean? (100th Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 4th Company?) Could there be anyway to name this Luger to a particular officer?

I had a regimentally marked Luger which I tracked through WW1 Intelligence documents on the German orbat in WW1. I got up to the Division and Corps that the regiment was assigned to and then cross-referenced to the Cdn official history of WW1 to see when Cdn troops were in contact with that division. That gave a pretty good indication of when and where it might have been picked up by a Cdn soldier. It was a WW1 bringback that stayed in the vet's family and was purchased from them. As I recall, it was marked to a machine gun company.

I went through this more than 30 years ago using the Int document that was in the NDHQ library.

You couldn't relate this pistol to the individual who carried it, but you can get down to the regiment, and maybe the company, that it was issued to. There are doubtless collectors on this forum who could help you further.
