I saw a recipe on the show Canada in the Rough. It is the Deer leg done over a fire with a garbage can. Now I saved a deer leg this year and want to try it, but don't know where to find the stand to put the leg on. Does anyone know where to get one of these or should I just get someone to make it?

By the way great site for some recipes, I have tried the whiskey and maple syrup ingection on a roast and it turned out great. Found ingector in walmart and canadian tire!

Looks like something Fogducker could make for you. I'll show him this thread. Looks amazing :dancingbanana:

this past fall,we joined up with a few guys from the windsor area,to hunt up near the dryden area..
for a thanksgiving meal, they cooked up a turkey in this same manner..
it was freaking awesome:D..
if you need any info on a set up,contact a member here by the name of
bullwinkle3006..he was the chief cook on the set up of it..
it was basically done as per the video in the link posted..
but a digital thermoniter was used to keep check of the turkey..
i had a plan of making some kind of basket to hold the bird togeather while it was cooking,as it just fell apart when the cooking was done..
but it was the juciest and tenderest turkey ive ever eaten..
if you can come up with a plan i,ll gladdly weld you up something:D

The actual spit looks like your garden variety rotisserie. All you need is some kind of base to hold it on end. Hmmmm.. perhaps a piece of pipe buried in the ground where you plan on cooking would suffice. Or, for a portable version, get someone to weld a short piece of pipe to a cross type base. Then just stand the rotisserie on end in the pipe.

I bet that plan is a lot clearer in my head than it is in writing.....:p

thats kind of what i have a vision of:)...about how far do you think the roast should be from the ground?im thinking about 4 inches or so,just so you can toss the taters under the roast..what ya think?
and yes JYC..stainless is a must:D

Most rotisseries are adjustable as far as where the forks tighten on to the shaft, if your going store bought with a home-made stand. If you are building the whole thing from scratch, make it adjustable for the whole height of the can.

i hope these pics show up..im not to sure on how to add two pics at the same time:redface:..
any ways here is turkey set up while it was cooking..and the end result

btw..the about 20 lb turkey took about three hours to cook..a tall can of beer was in the cavity to keep some moisture in the home made oven..
the can was not lifted during cooking till the thermometer read out the desired temp...

My problem with the whole concept was and still is the galvanized can.I lined my smoker with galvanized metal and luckily was told it was a real no-no before I used it.
I lit the burner for an hour and you could see the weird color changes in the metal.

How much to build a can out of stainless?

supply me with the material, then your cost will be notta..but with the garbage can you are to pre burn it to get all the factory fabricating crap out of it..
but if your still worried, buy a few links of stove pipe
join about 4 of them togeather side ways to make it a lot bigger of a diameter..
make up a home made lid ,then viola you have a oven;)..

Thanks for the offer, I was hoping to buy but as a last resort I have a guy here who will make it for me. I did have a chance to take to the Chef on the show this weekend and he said that it was a handmade instrument. Love the pics never even thought to use the digital thermometer for it, so thanks for that tip. Was wondering how to calculate when done. I am definately thinking of doing a turkey now for camping!

You would have to pre-burn that too, it will stink big time until you've burnt all the coating off of it.

i,d like to post the pics all at one time:redface:..but this computer dummy only knows how to do one at a time..any ways
heres a twenty pound turkey getting ready to be garbage can nuked, with a bunch of taters wrapped up under it:D
