Is there a point in keeping my steel 7.62x39 and 12 guage shells? Does anyone purchase once used rounds in such calibers?

what would be a fair asking price for either cartridge?

many thanks,

nick

x39 steel is pretty much garbage. All mine go to the smelter with the rest of the steel scrap. 12 gauge some guys reload but usually they need good hulls. Some crack and stuff and aren't the best when they are re-crimped. From what I hear from guys that reload out here winchester AA hulls work good. Federal would work IMO because they are better built but that's just a guess. Winchester game load hulls would be crap IMO as I've had a great many many split on me once shot.

Not too many guys reload shells anymore tho... not as popular as before. It's almost as expensive to reload 'em given the price of lead now. I know guys that used to make their own pellets but that's a whole other pain in the ass.

A fair price for 12 ga. hulls is free, if you shoot at a trap or skeet club. If you do buy them I wouldn't pay more than 4 or 5 cents. There are a lot of junk hulls that I would reload once but not pay for but the ones I would pay for and reload several times would be Any Remington (not UMC) older Win AA compression formed (not the newer AA 2 piece hulls, or the Universal)

compression formed AA 5 cents
Rem STS, RXP, Peters Blue Magic 5 cents
Rem Gun clubs 3-4 cents
AT Most!

Try this for costing, http://www.trapshooters.com/rlcalcadv.htm

Is there a problem reloading the Winchester Universals? Or do they not stand up to multiple reloads?

I have several that I saved to load Lee Key slugs into. They are all in good shape but I will keep an eye on them after I reload them once.

They don't stand up well or give good crimps.

I try anything I can find data for. I even reload federal top guns once or twice if they go from pouch to bench but the paper base wad can be a problem for multiple reloads or if wet.

I think you're going to find the steel casings rust after a week if they're the surplus ones. Some people reload them and others say it's really unsafe. I don't think anyone would pay you money for them because it costs $.17 / shot to buy new surplus cartridges, that's as much as people pay just for x39 brass.

Steel rifle cases are not reloadable. Mild steel is not elastic like brass. Most, but not all are berdan primed as well. Make some drawer pulls and pitch the rest.
Not all shotgun shells are reloadable either. Once fired hulls don't have much value.

I have never heard of anyone reloading steel cases; I can't see it being good for dies and the malleability is not as good as brass. Furthermore, Berdan primed cases aren't worth the effort unless there is no alternative.

Shotshells cost about the same to reload as to buy the lower priced factory ammo. The real savings potential is if you are loading for one of the less common gauges, like 16 or 28, or you want something else that isn't readily available.
