I would like to touch up the bluing on my 870.
Can I buy some of the cold bluing creme and get good results?
Or should I have the gun reblued by a gunsmith?

Any tips or comments?

It does not work that well. You can try it and if you are not happy with the results you can always have it refinished professionally. Don't sand the metal whatever you do.

I have tryed a large varity

Get some Oxpho , and de grease first, then apply, then buff with fine steel wool, then repeat, and after its dark enough and blended in, buff with a soft cotton :)
as levi says, but I rinse with water in between applications:)

For crying out loud, son, learn to spell or use a spell checker. You're as bad as Beeson. I don't like trying to decode posts.

Back to the subject at hand.

Cold blue works better if you use a heat gun on low temperature, to pre-heat the work area.:D

"...difrent blewes..." What? All cold bluing works on all carbon steels. Cold bluing doesn't work on SS or Al.
"...touch up the bluing..." That's what it's for. Follow the directions on the bottle. Cold bluing will work for a whole firearm, but it's not easy to get and even colour.

Hmmmm.
There are different blues. On some steel, some blues work. On other steels, other blues work.

With my experience, cold blueing is not as durable as hot blueing. If you do put down multiple layers of cold blueing, it will be more durable.

Forget about the C.T. or Wallymart cold blueing.

Make sure you have good ventilation. I did this in the garage with a torch (winter) and got gassed. Selenium poisoning makes you weak and smell like garlic. Lasted about 2 weeks. (nice finish tho)

Good idea to drink heavily when blueing.
