Does Mentoring section even work ?

I pm'd a few guys in the mentoring section that were needing a place to hunt and people to show them the ropes.All people were in reasonable distance from me and where I hunt and only 1 reply.I would think that if someone's asking to have the ropes shown to them and need a place to hunt there would be a reply.Does this section just have alot of dreamers ???????

I suspect that most people just give up. I eventually taught myself to hunt and am still pretty shaky. Gradually I've been meeting people in other ways and hunting with them, but by and large most of us are just flying by the seat of our pants.
 
Lot's of people don't like to give up their hunting spots. That even goes for a good gopher patch when they are scarce.
 
i think many guys get the CORE and are gung-ho for the first bit. if they dont get out in the first little bit and get hooked they fade out. i know more people personly that have hunter #S and have never been hunting then ones that hunt. probly alot to do with ware i live.

maybe they just get discouraged by your 88 tag?
 
I have taken some guys out from another board to get them started. Even hunt the odd time with some of them still. You have to remember Canada is a big country and Ontario is a big province. That is usually what stops guys from continuing to hunt with me. We are 2 hours away from the GTA in good traffic and it is hard to travel that distance for guys who have other priorities like work and family.

Someone coming from the GTA has 4 hours of driving back and forth before you include hunting time. Try and be up here before sun up on a Saturday and they are waking up pretty early after working the week, it gets old fast. Most have a hard time getting a week off to deer hunt with work and family commitments. The wife wants a winter vacation in the south and the kids want a week in the summer up north.

I checked on Google Maps where you are from me and it is like a four and half hour drive. You add some cottage traffic into that and you could be on the road for six hours. I remember seeing you looking for someone before but that is what stopped me from even offering to take you out. Others who have posted that are far away I do not offer either. I think it does work you just need to find people close enough.
 
I've posted up looking for help. I have a coworker that is going to take me out one weekend here for turkey. If I don't have luck for turkeys and for future hunts superbrad has been kind enough to offer his help/top secret spot.
 
I was offering a 9 day hunt in Algonquin Park to all I pm'd and looked at where they lived so knew it wasn't a big deal to drive the distance to hunt for a week.Just would've been nice to get more replies one way or the other !!!
 
I think I may have gotten that PM from you. I was a little confused as it was out of the blue, asking for a decent amount of cash for a fall hunt and mentioned nothing about mentoring. It seemed like a mass generated PM so I dismissed it as spam, sorry for the lack of reply.

Now that I know it's not spam and a bit more info, I would possibly be interested but right now my work schedule looks like I will be away for the majority of the fall :(

The price is also what could be making people shy away. I'm sure it is a good deal but things start to add up the first season after the course, license, tags, hunting gun, hunting ammo/sighting in, camo, decoys, calls, blinds, etc. I know right now after doing a good chunk of that stuff the last thing my wife wants to hear is I'm going away for 9 days and blowing a few hundred bucks (probably closer to $1000 after all is said and done)

Mentoring should work but with the following thought: Given a willing student and a willing mentor it should work.
Drinking until 12 and sleeping until after I returned from my AM hunt was a clue.
Not following instructions was another. Not having any equipment was another. Expecting a quarter (cut wrapped and frozen) when he failed to show was another.
Expecting me to pay the whole shot is like asking if I will pay for your University edu"M"cation. Once bitten - twice shy. Bit once shame on you - Bit twice shamke on me. You can pick you friends but even some long time friends can't be mentored. The next person wanting to be mentored should make certain they are more than half of the solution - in $$$ that might read 500 to 1000 but there will never be a free ride!

my first hunt i was shown the ropes by 4 guys. was i totaly prepaired? no. i did infact have the basics and a open mind to learn. they showed me gutting skinning and care for the meat. i have been a bush kid my whole life so i have a good handle on everything up the the "BANG". i was very greatful and have alot of respect for all 4 of them.

takes the right kind of student to bring the best out in the teacher.

It sucks you had a bad experience but I'd say your friend sounds like a ####. I have an offer here to go out locally... no cost to me. I have also had an offer on this board from another member stating all I need to bring is myself. I may be taking him up on his offer but I will bring all the gear I have/can get as well as the "soda" for after huntings done.
