Does the PLA prefer the AK to the Type 81? They seem to be focusing on the AK production over Type81:

"the T81 was seldom produced by the factory."

"The factory has a 50 million dollar government contract for AK’s that has to be produced first."

No not at all, every ex-soldier i know would prefer 81. BTW they all prefer type 95(type 97 in Canada).
81 is a better SKS in every way with a AK looking.

The reason they said that is probably true.
Yes, there are some army wanna buy T81 as higher quality AK. For them, Norinco would say come and insert your credit card then go load your truck, because there are millions and millions surplus type 81 in storage. Those surplus is not what we gonna get in Canada because they are automatic rifle with too short barrel. I dont think Canadian market(only market demands new t81) is big enough to make them reopen the production line.
go buy a t97 gen 2. It has a better trigger, factory rail and flip-up sight, new mag release. The only drawback is still mag well. You have to file it in order to make your AR mags fit in.

How is it better than the AK?

While the Peoples Liquidation Army did adopt the Ak in limited amounts.
They used it initially as the western armies gave a Sten/Sterling/Uzi/Grease Gun to the section commander type of soldier.
All the regular infantrymen of the squad got the old SKS. Later when the Type 81 came in, the T81 replaced the SKS at first.
Eventually even the AK in the smg role for the leader may have been changed over to T81s too, after alll they have a full auto fun switch too.

The AK has been kept in production mostly for select orders and for foriegn sales and foriegn aid.
They have flooded asia and africa with their ak copies for both cash sales and to influence so many different groups.

Now that the have switched over to Type 95 (in mass production) and Type 03 (in limited production too), the Type 81 machinery and tooling is probably either redone or in a warehouse.
AK production for sales and aid is continuing.
As well as all the other Norinco products for sale such as CQ M4geries to Nepal and such.
Strangely enough, there are reports that they are selling the Type 97 in 5.56mm to places in Asia too, Cambodia perhaps.
Yet they seem reluctant to let anyone else get hold of their 5.8mm ammo???

Much more Accurate, More reliable than type 56 (Chinese ak which is most popular ak used in the world- based on some report I read) and lighter.

Thanks, what's the story behind the unusual rear sight?

If we could buy AK's nonrestricted, I'd grab one hands down. But seeing as they're prohibited the type 81 will be my saving grace.

Oops read the title. No direct info on PLA choice but my opinion will remain lol

Have you tried both ?

I have shot pently of AKs, AKMs, AKSU, AK74. The short stroke system on any gun will be more accurate and softer then a over gassed AK long stroke piston. As for the bolt hold open, well that's common knowledge.

Totally agree with ya based on experience as well, short stroke piston is definitly a plus.

In China, If you know some military high rank officer, it wont be hard to get a chance of shooting. This is called Guanxi. If you dont know any officer, there are less than a dozen of shooting ranges in mainland China and it cost a monthly salary of average person.
In addition, joining army is only chance to shoot a gun in China and most of them shoot less than 200 round during their 2 year service so that they wont able to tell much useful information.
From my experience, it should be like 223 rem. type 95 is much easier to shoot than type 81. (i can shoot a football-size group when i was 13 with 95 and man-size with 81)
