Does the rifling on this Savage look normal?

I just picked up a brand new Savage hunting rifle in 308 win from WSS and had a chance to shoot it today. To make a short story even shorter, it shot very, very poorly. I noticed the rifling looked rough and was wondering if this was normal and/or if it could be the cause of its horrid groupings....Needless to say it's going back to WSS but I want someones opinion on this rifling:

That looks like someone put a round file in the muzzle and gave it a few turns,send it back. Buy a Remington next time...........

ive seen tooling marks like that before but not as deep if i recall. however i dont think somebody has messed with it as the crown isnt screwed up at least from what i can see

Even if it shot I bet it would rip the patches to s**t when you cleaned it. Must have felt like you were trying to stroke a fish from the tail forward!

X2 ROA, I've seen some pretty pricey rifles with worse chatter marks than that. Sometimes they shoot well, sometimes they don't. They are always terrible foulers.

Take it back to WSS. That barrel obviously slipped through quality control. The newer Savages, although I'm not a Savage fan, usually have very nice bores.

If WSS gives you a problem, call Savage and complain. Email them the same picture and see what they say.

I have a remington that's worse, glad I didn't buy it to shoot. When you put a rod through it you can feel it chatter.

I just checked my Stevens in .308 and it is nowhere near that rough. I had to look extremely closely to see tool marks at all. From a foot away under a bright flashlight I got no impression at all of tool marks and the bore is cleaning quite easily, usually a sign of a smooth bore.

No that is not normal. They should take it back without any questions, and if they hassle you send that picture directly to Savage (as someone already stated) and I am sure this will get sorted out.

That is not cool at all. Probably still shoots better than a Remington nest.

WSS is taking it back for an exchange, lets hope the next one is better! I really didn't think it was normal (I thought it was horrible) but wanted a second opinion. Thanks for the responses!

I own a Savage with a barrel just like yours and it shoots sub-moa.
Even though it looks like machining marks the barrel is very smooth, the patches won't catch. I explored the bore with a needle trying to figure out if those are lands and ridges and as far as I could tell they're not.

That is savage's version of the new "ratchet" rifling that everyone is hot for, but savage uses a ratchet to rifle the barrel, I don't believe they got it right.

Or check out Ruger barrels. My 06 is crisp and smooth and shoots reel gud.
Also they do high end machining for other companies and their work is considered grade a. Helps they make their own barrels.
