Does the SKS destroy scopes ?

Just to clarify, I'd like some feed back from those of you who have properly mounted, quality name brand scopes, with quality reciever mounts such as a choate for example on your sks.

Does the punishing dual semi auto recoil of the sks cause even a good Leupold scope mounted with a reciever mount (drilled and tapped) like the choate mount to lose zero ?

My eyes just ain't what they use to be for stock open sights.
However, if the sks just eats scopes for lunch I'd appreciate you boys stopping me from wasting my money.

Thanks

The only thing that I have come a cross for the SkS platform that hasn't lossed zero or distroyed my scope after a few hundread rounds is either the $150 Scout Mount from Marstar or that $75 mount from that new company B.C. Tactical.
Although after the 3rd time to the range I sold my Scout Mount because I was sick and tired after every time I took off the rail to clean the rifle I would have to re-zero it again. Truley a pain in the rear.
As for that B.C. Tactical SkS mount I have yet to had a problem yet to report about it.
As for the drill and tap mounts they are good to except for the perment modification done to the reciever.

Satian ... How does the Scout Mount (marstar) and the BC Tactical version differ? Aren't they mounted in the same fashion and no need to remove them for cleaning?

The Marstar mount is more complicated than it needs to be, it uses 10 set screws as oppose to the B.C.T. using just 2. It also leaves 4 marks on your RSB and the rail needs to be removed for cleaning. The B.C.T. mount solves all that with just a roll pin and 2 set screws that dont leave marks where they can be seen. Its also clearanced to allow opening the gas tube latch with the mount in place. The only advantages the Marstar mount has are a longer rail and back up iron sight groove. But that comes with a higher price. They both hold zero though.

I seem to remember seeing somewhere that if you enlarge the ejection port of the SKS by a few millimeters, the cases eject on the left side instead of hitting the frame an bouncing upward toward the scopes... Has anyone done this?

Page 60 of the optics sticky, I posted all the details and pics. Ejection is to the right at 2:30 to 3:00. Works like a charm and makes you wonder why Simonov left that corner in there.

What type of optic were you planing on mounting? if it's glass then I would drill and tap. If it's a red dot or low power pistol scope then the scout style mount's are the way to go. Once I get my tapco stock from SKSMAN dot COM I will try to do a little review for ya ;)
But basicaly what supernova said.

I am going to install a choate drill and tap receiver mount. I'm looking at a scope in 3-9x40 either 4200 Elite or VX-2 Just trying to pick people's brain as to which scope will stand the test of time and high round count the best.

I was thinking of a red dot, something small. I like scopes but I don't have the means to drill and tap for Choate mount, nor do I actually want to try to do it myself (no real machinist around here). And I never did like the look of a SKS with a scope, they always sit to high above the rifle throwing the lines off .. lol.

I was thinking of Burris or Insight MRDS for a low profile red dot mounted on the BC Tactical version of the scout mount. I know that SKS man was trying to procure a bunch for his shop but it's just as easy to get one off here as well.

You know I have one of those Tapioca aftermarket gas cylinders, the plastic shroud / pizzicati rail for it is a joke, held on with 2 roll pins. However, given some time in a good machine shop, I am thinking it might be possible to press fit, or shrink fit and set screw in place a solid steel block to replace the laughable piece of plastic. It might be then possible to install a scope base on the top of such a modified tapioca cylinder, and expect it to hold something resembling a repeatable zero. Take note, it has been observed that scopes start walking your rounds with these sort of gas cylinder scope bases when they get warm. However, any rifle will start walking your rounds unless it's got a bull barrel in any case. Firing an SKS to that extent in Canada is commendable! :D

PS, one thing going for the Tapioca aftermarket gas cylinders is that they have to be hand fitted to allow the latch to engage over the end of the gas cylinder, allowing you to control the fitting according to your skill with a 2nd cut file.
