Savage 111 Long Range Hunter in 338 Lapua. Is it a hunting rifle, or a cheap long range precision rifle?

I'd say it's all in the name.

What's next? Are you going to ask what's the number for 911? :p

All kidding aside, the barrel length and thickness may be a bit on the light side for ultimate velocity & accuracy potential at extended long ranges. The stock certainly isn't necessarily the best option either for position shooting nor offer enough rigidity.

To each their own. It's designed for hunting, I don't think I'd confuse its intended purpose for anything else but that.

Lol I would say its a very good start. It is a Beauty! :)

But are you sure you wanna jump onto the .338 train for a "start"???

A precision rifle and long range hunter is just that. It all depends how it shoots. A long range hunter should shoot 5/8ths or better( 3 shot group). A precision rifle should be capable of 3/8ths or better( in my opinion, others may disagree). In my opinion a custom or semi custom that shoots 3/8ths or better is a precision rifle. Not all custom rifles are precision by any means.
So, how does it shoot?

It's a good start. Take a little longer between firing rounds. Let it cool down.

Nice looking gun. Get some good optics and start reloading.

You are going to have a lot of fun.

A precision rifle is one that puts the bullets right were you want them and does it every time. The only way to find out if it is precise is to shoot it.

Agreed....and its deifnitely a rifle... but are you a precision shooter? thats where it counts you gotta get on the range and sort it out. Keep in mind you'll be shooting ten dollar bills out of the barrel lol
