Does this smell like B S to you?

Sounds like it to me. Unlike what people from Florida might think, winter is only ONE of four seasons we get here....

"The comb has been shaved down as is common on guns found in Canada. The large collars on the winter coats made shaving the combs of the stocks quite practical."

Sounds like something Rick Mercer would say on his "Talks to Americans" show.

Don't know about winter coats, but I've seen a few antiques with the combs dished out like that.

How quaint. Was this written in the 1800's or something ;)

see dem eskeeemos up dere wear beeeg furs martha, and dem canajuns shave down dem dere combs fer dat

I have seen a couple of Canadian marked Sniders with the combs shaved down and that is the story I was told that this was to allow for the coats and hats?
Never seen a offical documents but both Sniders I saw and handled were done a long time ago

Actually " BUBBA" was alive and well in 1840 and working on decommisioned military rifles and has been doing it ever since. My belief on this, is that it was a local trend that was done on firearms with large combs. Similar to Kentucky Rifles being built a unique way that was different to other parts of the country..

I wonder if it was done for people who were blind in their right eye but still shot right handed. On any gun that kicked though it would give you a belt in the chops.

cheers mooncoon

I have witnessed a guy who was cross eye dominant do that to a Remington so he could get his head far enough across the butt to sight with the opposite eye.....maybe the last owner of that gun was just as f**ked up as this acquaintance of mine was....

How would they shoot in the summer? No cheek weld.

I have seen a few shaved that way over the years. Heard different stories, but the winter coat one is the most popular. I like the idea of Bubba being alive and well in the 1800s, makes it a collectable catagory, no!!! Dave

I'm afraid that this was a "true" story. I have seen this written a couple of times and have also seen a Snider done this way. I would believe that "necessity was the mother of invention". Isn't it Winter in Canada all the time?

Canadian shaving

I dont know about you guys but these frigging HS syntetic stocks are really hard to shave so ive been shaving the fur off the hoods on my jackets and shirt collars instead and it seems to be working for me. Almost as well as a the new fangled "Plastic" dogsleds. Teknology is great.
