Doing the right thing and it still all goes wrong

Last night, I was trying to think of something worthy of my 1000th post here on CGN. Today, the topic was supplied by myself and my neighbour.

First, a little background. I had a VERY crappy day at work. Everytime I tried to get something done, either somebody had changed my schedual, or screwed up a parts order, were late meeting me at a site. The final straw was dispatch trying to pull me off of my Monday morning job which has already been put off twice at the last minute. I flat out told them no, and left.

I decided to treat myself to some new toys, so I stopped at the candy store on the way home. I picked up a few case length trimmers, a new electric lead melting pot\furnace, and the new mould I had been looking at.

I got home, and nobody was around. No wife, no kids, just me and some new stuff to play with. Casting relaxes me, and all I want right now is to be left alone with my lead. I set up on the back of my truck because I didnt want to stink up the garage with the house being up forsale.

I got about 8 lbs of lead going....cleaned and smoked and lubed my new die....got a pail of water ready...etc. I had literally only cast 2 very rough starting bullets when my neighbour walked up and started talking to me. Hes a great old guy, but hes on some new pain medication, and he was COMPLETELY stoned. All I wanted was to be left alone for an hour. Is that too much to ask???? I didnt want to continue while he was distracting me, asking questions that he would know the answers to if he wasnt brain baked on his meds. I stepped up into the back of my truck to shut off the power inverter (powering my new pot). I was also trying to keep an eye on him. Hes an "I just have to touch it" kind of guy. I didnt want him to touch the lead pot or mould and get burnt.

Anyway, while trying to watch him, trying to step over something else in the back of my truck, and not miss that "last step" and come crashing down on my concrete driveway, I hit the VERY full pot with the back of my boot.

This resulted in an 8 to 10 foot splatter of about 4 pounds of lead onto my driveway, as well as, my new mould was now completely covered in lead right to the handles. I was livid. No other word for it. Just LIVID. I calmly told my neighbour that I couldnt talk to him right now, went into the house and closed the door. I dont know where he went. After about 15 minutes of wantiing to kill small animals for no reason other than to cause a death .....I calmed down and went to clean up.

After 1 1/2 hours of being down on my knees, scraping with a screwdriver, I had 99% of the driveway cleaned up. I hope that the last of the imbedded splatters comes out with the pressure washer tomorrow. If anyone had had success with this, let me know. I could use some good news. Lie to me if you have to :D

I took a couple of pictures of the mould, but I haven't even begun to try and clean it.

I guess I'll just have to write this one off to "one of those days". I should have just done the wrong thing and kept on casting with the distraction. Anyway, here are a couple of pictures of the mould for everyones amusement.

Good thing that no one was hurt. That could have been a VERY nasty accident.

On the lighter side it is a bit amusing.... I can just picture a huge shiny splash all down the driveway. Could have been worse. The neighbours could have gone by while you were in the house and called haz-mat thinking it was mercury!

The mold should clean up without too much trouble seeing as its almost all on the metal. Hope the driveway comes clean too if your trying to sell.

Yup, could have definately been worse. You could have splashed the old geezer with the lead. :runaway: In the few nano seconds before he had a massive cardiac from the shock he would have sobered right up. :)
Glad to hear no one was hurt, but the pics *ARE* funny...no...hilarious actually. Kinda like the coyote's inventions backfiring while trying to nab the roadrunner.
Not being into casting, do you have to worry about impurities in the lead now? (meaning dirt from the driveway)

Oh...congrats on 1000 posts

(Hehehe...I could find out where you live by driving around looking for a silver driveway..)

Wife and/or kids around coulda' made it a whole lot worse. A little careful work with a propane torch will clean the mould up. I often use a torch to warm up the bottom spout on my pot to get 'er flowing and also to preheat the mould a bit. It gets better from here on.

Dennis, you will get all the lead off of that new Lyman mold and next time we see a picture of it the mold will look like new again!
Cheers, Bruce

I can't help but to laugh as well, thankfully no one was hurt, your lead was likely just over 700 degrees. your mold will clean up very easily and look new in no time. tap off what will come loose on its own then rest the mold ontop of your molten lead, it will peel right off just like the sprue when you are casting. I wish you had of taken a picture of the driveways for us though.

Well, I cleaned the mold. About 20 minutes with the torch and a pick and it's a bit dirty looking, but in good shape.

I've got to agree about how bad it could have been. My neighbour had his dog with him......also known as his only son. Judging by the splatter, nobody got nailed thank GOD !!! The kids both have dentist appointments this morning, so I'll try the pressure washer this afternoon and let you guys know if it works or not.

It's artwork!! Kinda looks like a SMG of some sorts. I'd put it on the wall or through it like a ninja star at a fluffy bunny. ;) Maybe you could sell it on the knife forum as a bayonet of some sorts. There'll be better days.
