Dominant eye? Can't figure it out!

You don't need to blind your dominant eye, something like a small opaque plastic post-it tab in the right spot should work.
Exactly! A half inch square of opaque tape in the right place is all you need to shift the focus to your other eye. Like lots of people, I'm right handed and left eye dominant. The tape trick lets you retain all your peripheral vision and only comes into play when you're actually on the sights.

So I went to the optometrist and I am indeed left eye dominant, even though I'm right handed. No wonder it feels wonky!

It isn't uncommon. I'm in the same boat. When shooting handguns, I find it easier to tilt my head to the right slightly so that my left eye lines up with the sights a bit better.

When I first started shooting it took me a while to figure out why I felt so awkward lining up the sights.

Place a piece of TRANSLUCENT tape horizontally across the top of the non-dominant lens. The lower edge of the tape should be just low enough so that when you are looking at your sights with your dominant eye, you can only see up to the top of the shooting wrist with the non-dominant eye. You can close the dominant eye to check this.

This will permit you to keep both eyes open without blocking light out of one eye. You want natural light coming into both eyes so that one eye isn't trying to compensate.

You can also adjust your stance/mount to place the gun in front of the dominant eye. It may involve a slight twist to the head as well.

OK great advice everyone! Thanks. I'm officially right eye dominant based on these tips -but I have a hard time closing the left and using the right eye. Need more practice - which isn't a bad thing! My PAL and RPAL should arrive any day now.

Use an eye patch to cover your non-dominant eye for handguns.
For rifles, you really have no choice.

Try keping both eyes open. You can still use your right eye. I was taught that was the best way to do it but not everyone can do it. I find that sometimes it makes my vision around where I am looking a bit strange but as long as the target/sight is clear and you can shoot well that way it is good. Give it a try and see what happens.

I've got a dominent LEFT eye but I'm RIGHT HANDED.I shoot a bow LEFT handed, but a rifle RIGHT handed. Not only is my LEFT eye dominent, but its stronger-bit of a challange. Some people say I should switch to shooting my rifle left handed-but its kind of awkward

I'm left handed, right eye dominate. I used to shoot left handed then switched to right hand. I can shoot both ways but its just habit to shoulder it with the right now.

One old timer that deer hunts with us, shoots right and closes his right eye using a scope. He's got his head cocked sideways and looks funny but he's a pretty good shot. His excuse is all right handed guns and he's left eye dominate.

I was told it doesn't matter if you are using a scope or an optic site...no problem using your non-dominant eye.

I am also left eye dominant and right handed...just starting out in the sport and I want to give shooting left a try although I normally shoulder on my right.

I'm a newbie to guns but not new to target shooting since I've been shooting archery competively for 13 years.

In archery when someone has a left eye dominance we will make them shoot lefty with the bow in the right hand instead of the left hand which bring the string to the left eye. If feels acquired at first but they get used to it very quick.

Wouldn't it make sense to also try this with a rifle?

Cheers,

The little test is telling me I am right eye dom, but I shoot right handed pistol and look down the sights with my left eye.

Rifle, I look down the sight with the right eye.

Really, I have no problem with either.

With both eyes open point at something across the room, without moving close one eye, then open it and close the other, your finger will have stayed on target with the dominant eye and will have moved with the weak eye.

Yup. I find this method (pointing instinctively with your dominant index, etc....) more precise than the thumb. Sorry, it's just me.

The web has patches to cover the non-dominant eye.
They are like the clip-on sunglasses that you clip and
flip up and down but have only one "eye". Eyepatching
your non-dominant eye but keeping it open while you shoot
(for me it's handguns), helps with depth of field and
perception and peripheral vision which adds to stability.
