DOMINION ARMS DESPERADO/ NORINCO COACH GUN - Accuracy/preference help needed

The "ENERGY BY THE INCH THE GREAT SHOTGUN CHOP" Article (link below) states that in there testing the velocity difference between a 30 inch and a 12 inch barrel which was cut in 1-inch increments was only 200 ft per second and the 12 inch barrel actually patterned almost identical to the 24-inch Barrel.

So after reading that I am now seriously considering buying a shotgun with a 12 inch barrel either coach gun side by side or Desperado over/ under. My intention for this gun would be to use as I am going through the bush as it would be short not snag on things and not really get in the way.

My question is does anyone have any experience/recommendations regarding either of these guns, specifically if anyone has tempted to see what type of grouping they could get shooting slugs.

I had a Norinco Grizzly with a 14" barrel and ghost ring sights. I could not shoot it as accurately as my 870 with 18" barrel and ghost ring sites.

Even though these short barrels shotguns can be accurate by themselves it is likely the sighting system that will be the limiting factor to achieve accuracy with slugs.

With a 12" barrel you don't have much to aim with.
However, if you can install a red dot for example .... you should be able to shoot groups similar to a much longer barrel.

I am getting 2" groups at 50 meters with my 870 and 20" barrel and foster slugs.

I have an Outlaw.

At 25 yards both barrels printed about 8-10 inches high so I mounted a larger TruGlo tube to lower POI.

The right barrel shoots to POA but the left barrel POI is 14" left of the POA using the center bead. I JB welded a second TruGlo tube to the left of the center tube and now am on POA with it.

Thanks geologist! I have always been partial to break action guns Never Had a double barrel or a side by side good to know that it can be accurate.
Any chance you could share a picture of your sights?

The over under Desparado is a way nicer gun then the old Norinco SXS's. Canada Ammo also had some nice looking short Side by Sides if you decide to go that route.

I picked up a used Richol over under on the EE last year. It looks like it was made in the same factory as the Desperado but it has double triggers instead of the single trigger of the Desperado. I haven't shot it much since I bought it but it shoots where I point it with both barrels. The original owner said it shot a bit high so he adjusted the front sight by un threading it a bit to make it taller. There is a bit of a gap between the top of the barrel and the base of the front sight but it seems pretty solid as is. Corwin Arms has a no battery reflex type sight that will apparently mount on the rib of most Turkish shotguns but I have not seen one in person.

Short Over unders are not as wide as the side by side's and personally I'd rather have one barrel hit a little high or low then shoot right or left.

Thanks 0faustus0

Maybe I'll consider getting the Armed Over Under "Trimmer" 14 inch barrel from westrifle , it comes with a built-in rail for mounting a reflex or Red Dot sight.

I was looking at the Armed Trimmer myself .... and yes to put a red dot on it. If it had dual triggers I had bought one.

One more point .... those double barrel shotguns are not regulated like a double barrel rifle ... meaning each barrel will shot to a different point of aim.

If you want to reach out with slugs .... you will have to sight it in for one barrel .... and the other will not shoot to point of aim.

That is why I would want double triggers .... load my "slug barrel" with a slug .....and the other maybe with buckshot .....and have the option to shoot one or the other depending on the situation .....

You can shoot one or the other with a single trigger, the only difference is you'd have to select the barrel with the selector then pull the trigger.

At this point as much as I love the double barrels I thinks I might just get an 870 clone with a 12" barrel, will be a bit longer but less to worry about it seems.

Corwin Arms has a no battery reflex type sight seems pretty cool but not sure I would trust it, doesn't look like it's adjustable.

Personally if I were the OP, I would start a search for the Ricol 20 gauge over/under, with rudimentary open sights, screw in chokes, single selective trigger with 16" barrels. Put on a recoil pad and the Corwin Vomz sight. This is an awesome do everything shotgun. Light, short, well made, durable. Doesn't kick as hard with the 20 gauge slugs, and is slimmer than the 12 gauge version. Barrels are well regulated. Won't be as hard on the ears as a 12" 12 gauge either if you don't happen to have ear plugs in. And shorter overall length to boot.

The selective trigger is in my opinion far nicer to use than the double trigger version.

However, they are sold out so this would be a used gun on the EE most likely. Set up as above, this may cost around 700$, but it's worth it.

That sounds like a good plan, I'm wishing that corwin arms still had the Ricol O/u in stock!

I'm going to email him and see if more are coming and/or who made them as there are a few different options vor short o)u guns but not many for 20g.
