With time of an essence this Rut particularly, i was able toget out this morning really early ( 4am) to get up on the ridges in the ute an listen to what was goin on around the area, i rolled the swag out at 430 to get a few hours (1.5) sleep before light..
i heard several grunting bucks in the night, on and off, an once light i got up an went down the track to drop into the back of farm land, hunting the public land off the ridges.
lots of little gulleys, always good hunting, wind is the problem, it gets ya!

anyway , a few run ins last two weeks with a dark buck in this area, i had since gone for a hunting trip along the Coast of Victoria for another Species, unsuccesfully mind you.

so back to the local patch an it seems to be peak rut, you beauty...

I walked around an then walked up into this buck grunting with some Does in the gulley head pictured, i didnt play the best play on him but got up to 50m of him and as he was onto me i got a shot off on him broadside and he took off for a short dash and came running back down the hill, i was about to send another when i noticed he was not quite well.

piled up infront of me near where he was shot, Not a huge deer, Not totally thrilled on killing him but the Cape will be mounted as a practise piece and also to add to the local fallow colour phases we have here!

i wont shoot another unless its record book stuff, id prefer to film them now the itch has been scratched i think... its more rewarding for me but there is some pressure to shoot one for weird reasons i cant explain but im trying to work out.... social media influence perhaps, which is ironic..

anywho, enjoy some photos.

i do love these little ones alot more in a nice way, than the big Sambars, but i love hunting the Sambars more :)

anywho!

You guys are more than Welcome! its a pay-in-advance for some Hunting reports from Canada...Alright! :)

I am now, tonight, pleased with the success and glad it wasnt another frusterated encounter story id rather not tell...again. which has been the case lately.
So i am a bit hard on myself too, but you just cant expect every buck to be a huge one, or in or past its prime time... it is what it is, bloody good hunting!

chase them again possibly for two mornings before the weekend an call it good!

video is the target outcome now!

Good work, Rhys. Always enjoy your hunting stories and pictures.
I would not have turned that guy down. How are they to eat in
the rut? Regards, Dave.

That is a beautiful hide, will you get it made into a rug?

Hey mate, i will actually mount it as a shoulder mount-
i have a few areas i need to improve on before i can commercially produce Taxidermy Shoulder mounts etc! so im making the mistakes on my Deers over the years and i rekon by the time i do this one i will be ready to rock and roll!

i tanned a flat rug off a black buck last year and it is so soft and looks awesome , this will be a great adition to some Spotty yellow Specimens on the wall already :)

never seen that much that dark buck. always spotted ones do you know where they come from?

hey mate there is more an more darker ones gettin around now due to them breeding the does more , even yellow hinds are spittin out darkies... but the yellow ones get shot a bit more often in the bush as they stand out more...
the darkies have a smaller frame and skull and body over all, which at times on the hoof , makes the antlers appear bigger... sorta happened here but it is what it is.
4.5 -5.5 year old buck id rekon. (with no real scientific idea on that.)

these particulars were dropped off years ago in a secluded valley we believe... the other herd came from a penned group of 70 as some trial, the fence gave out one day/tree fell and nek minit, the pine plantations are over loaded with fallow....
they harvest the deer in there heavily now days an its hard to find bucks nor mobs like used to.. poor genetics from i assume too much inbreeding from initial 70..

secluded herd has good genetics but is on everyones hit list come the croak..
