I have this on the way:

Mueller APV 4.5–14×40 AO http://www.muelleroptics.com/img/products/MAPV451440S/SilverAPV.jpg

But I have not been satisfied on my search for a suitable companion, or host as it were. I have my selection of calibre's down to:

.17 HMR
.22 Magnum
.22 Hornet
.223 Rem

Basically I want to be able to take Varmint's from 50- 200 yds, and by this I mean Hogs,Coyotes and Fox. Also want to be able to paper punch, and just general fun. I do not have reloading equip. now, but am willing to get, and am planning on getting.

Some other requirements:

Laminated stock (cause they are so horny looking)
Heavy Barrel
Stainless Steel
Adjustable trigger
And just generally an accurate rifle without to much tinkering.

What think you? I already have a somewhat, sort of, kinda maybe selection in my mind, and am willing to concede that I should have one of everything that I have listed, but for this year it's only going to be one dedicated varmint rig and wanted to use you guys as a sounding board.

Any ideas are weclome and wanted,
Thanks,

Well, I wouldn't advise hogs, but for everything else you mentioned, my vote would go to the Ruger 77/22 Hornet in target grey/laminate. But it is a handloaders deal. When your talking 10 grains of powder per load, a pound goes a long ways. Their quiet, fun to shoot and would be ideally suited to 200 yards or less. (Or more, depending on what your shooting at;) ) Good luck.

Yep...223 in a rifle that fits and feels good!

Cheap to punch paper and hunt with, cheap to reload and lots of factory ammo available until you reload your own.

Fur friendly for the yotes and foxes too.

Look at a Savage with the accu-trigger...they have a good reputation for being accurate.

I think he meant ground hogs when he said hogs. The scope you have should work with any of the cartidges you listed. The two rimfire cartridges you mentioned are really too underpowered to consider for coyote. Factory ammo is much cheaper and easier to find for the 223 than the Hornet. Something in 223 would be my choice, probably a model 200 Stevens.

You may want to consider a 204 in your caliber choices, esp. if you plan on relaoding soon, what kind of budget do you have in mind for your new rifle, we took a fairly nice HB CZ 223 with a grey laminate stock in on trade today at P&D in Edmonton. LOP on this rifle is fairly short so if you are under 6 ft tall you might like it. This varmint stock is something I've never seen on a CZ and has very comfotable grip as well,Quite a nice looking rifle. FS

Go for a 50 :D that should work for you and if not go for the 223

There's something I never thought of, though it might raise some eyebrows were I was planning on using it. Was thinking more along the lines of a bang/flop kinda firearm, not a bang/mist.

Yep, hogs = ground hogs, sorry for the confusion, I could see how that would raise some eyebrows at the local stock yard.

Never thought of the .204 Ruger, but it could be an option, although I can see the sense in the .223, as it is cheap for factory ammo. Budget wise, I was thinking under a grand for rifle/rings/bases and cleaning rod etc., for this specific rifle.

I do like the savage and the accutrigger combo, and have had a chance to shoot a firearm with this feature. The CZ could also be an option, although I would have to touchy feely one first. I am not really a Winchester, Mossberg or Browning fan, so I guess that kinda narrows it down.

Thanks for all your replies,

I have a few hornets and 1 223, for coyotes at 200 a 223 is better. a hornet can a 223 will.factory food foe hornet is nuts.223 is everywhere CT & Wallyworld. 223 gives a higher gore score on gophers too (look at Tikka for good price& acc.)

varmint

You could always go single shot. Some are dirt cheap and 223 is so cheap to shoot and it goes waaaaaaayyyyy out there still smokin. I think I am in love with this one. And brass is sooooo easy to get. Loading 223 as a virgin loader should be a trip. Too much fun for one guy but I will survive. Somehow. If I have to.
