I have an very old side by side 12ga. Picked it up cheap along time ago, though it might look good over a fireplace some day. It has a ding in the barrel at 17.5". I've seen alot of short barreled shotguns for sale lately so I'm wondering is it legal to cut a shotgun under 18" if you maintain legal overall length? Or does it need to come from a factory with a short barrel? This guns maker has long since vanished so there is no way to know if they made a short version ( i doubt they did). Any help is appreciated.

Listen to NINE. Just because we can now order a factory made gun that has a barrel length less than 18" doesn't mean that the barrel length is legal on all of them. As he said it's messed up. This is the danger that we as gun owners run into at this time. Best bet if you do want to shoot it is contact someone like WGP and see if they have a replacement barrel. Then on to a competent gunsmith to make sure the fit is good, and you don't have any play between the barrel and action.

If a shotgun is manufactured with barrels less than 18" thats ok,But it is not legal to shorten a shotgun barrel under 18".Im 100% positive.Sorry deactivate it and hang it up or have the dent removed by a smith.Dave,

No need to cut it short of the ding unless it's really bad. Many gunsmiths can iron dents out of shotgun barrels and do so all the time. Normally it only takes a few minutes with the right tool, and you won't be able to find the spot again.
