Double double

I shot two black bears yesterday, troublemakers damaging stuff at my sister in laws cottage. I was shooting my Beretta Silver Sable O/U double rifle, 9.3x74R, Norma Oryx 18.5G factory loads. Both young male 100 -120 KG bears were centre chest / heart shots from about 120M and 80 M. The effect of the shots were immediately apparent, both did a quick death dash into cover but for only a short distance. I could easily hear the sound of the impact in both cases. Both shots exited. The second bear ran into very thick cover and still moving slightly when I found him, so I put and insurance shot from behind, through mid-back severing the spine. This is the bullet, recovered from the skin at the base of the throat area. Very impressive, after going through all that spinal bone and the sternum. Double diameter expansion with 95% weight retention and good penetration. I like hunting with 9.3 mm rifles and really like Oryx bullets!

Nicely done. Those Oryx bullets work really well. I have recovered two, one from a moose and another from a bison. They seem to pass through bears pretty easily.

I still have to recover a 9.3 bullet from a game... and I do hunt a lot with the 9.3 calibers since decades...

Thanks. the post was one I originally wrote for an international hunting forum, and since the USA is only developed country in the world that doesn't officially use SI ( Metric) units I thought it was OK to post here without changes. I personally use both systems, but am becoming less and less enthusiastic about anything American these days. And I was using Swedish ammo and an Italian rifle, and a German scope, all built using metric units.

The rifle was a bit of a problem child at first, not regulated well. But I had it re- regulated with the Norma Oryx factory load, and now it can keep a 100M 6 shot group shooting under/over three times, in a pattern smaller than my fist. It fits me like a fine bird gun. Instinctive and fast. Very useful at the distances I normally hunt. This was the first time I actually used it on game. Happy so far.

Nice rifle, which Schmidt and Bender scope do you have on it? I picked up a Fabarm Asper over under 9.3x74R in the spring. I put a Meopta R2 1.7-10x42 on it and was looking forward to hunting with it this fall. Unfortunately when I took it to the range I discovered that the bottom firing pin was broken. The warranty center just got the part in this week.

The scope is a S&B 1.5-8x42 Stratos, #4 reticle with illumination. I really like how the red dot shows up in dark bush and against dark fur. I couldn't find out what load it was originally regulated with and my various handloads struck out, so sent it down to JJ Perodeau in the USA, total cost to re regulate was about $2000 but results were worth it. This one is a forever keeper!
