I need a double duty load to try. I want one load for each rifle that will be work as a Whitetail/coyote load. I dont shoot past 300yds. Most shots on deer being under 150yds and most coyotes being under 250yds. I keep coyote hides so it should be as fur friendly as possible but I'd rather a torn up coyote than a wounded deer. I'll take accuracy over speed any day.

The .243 is a Stevens 200 w/22" bbl and the 25-06 is a Rem 700 SPS Stainless w/24"bbl. Both have 3x9-50mm bushnell trophy's on them.(ya, ya I know, its all I have on hand right now)

What bullet? (weight and brand)

What powder? (exact weights not required, just your favorite for the selected bullet weight)

Primer (I'm gonna use federals because I have a crap load of them here)

Brass (I have a bunch of Win brass for both so thats what I will be using)

I was looking at the same thing , and come up with this, 243/25-06 , gonna load for big game 100-120 gr range of bullets, which will work fine for passing coyotes. And keep the small 22 center fire for coyotes , and tested for long range.
Big game in 243 and 25-06 ;
4831 will work for both, and fit the bullet weight range, their are others.
Premium bullets are choice for these 1/4 bore and under, barnes, nosler
primers, Federal, Winchester
Cases. Winchester , I use .308 Norma for 243

Hope this helps some. :)

At that weight IMR 4831 should work beautifully for both. I'd go with partitions--they'll react with enough speed to easily take out coyotes, but will penetrate plenty deep for deer.

I would use 85 gr TSX in the 243 over some H4350 or RL19, and 110 gr Accubonds in the 25-06, over H4831sc or RL22

both have twist rates right around the 1:9". I wonder if thats enough for the 243 shooting more than 100g bullets????
243, 100 gr Max
25-06, 120 gr Max For me anyway , Don't overlook 90/95 in 243, and 100,115 in 25-06.
As for power IMR or H4831 sc are nice powders , but many will work, Reloader 15 is one of my favourite in .308 , and I like 19 in 30-06 , 22 in 25-06 etc... Test . test and more test , thats the fun part eh! :) And all gun / barrels are not the same

Loaded up and tested some punt loads just to create some fire formed brass and i can tell you already that the 25-06 recoils way to much for my intended purpose.(GF's deer rifle/my yote killer) There is no way the GF is gonna be able to shoot it with 120g loads when these 117's were uncomfortable for me after 40 of them.

I did the same thing for the 243 and this should work out well. The 100g sp I used to fireform brass were grouping right @ an average of 10 shots 1.92" 5 times. I ordered 2 boxes of 85g TSX's to try later this winter.

Now, do I sell/trade the 25-06 to get some cash ffor some good glass for the .243 or do I make myself a .257Rob. Ackley-Imp.???:dancingbanana:

You could try what Ive done, to make a lower recoil 25-06 load. 100 grain bullet over 37.6 grains of H4895. 2850 fps in a 24" tube. If you go with a bullet like the Barnes TSX or Nosler Partition, you wont sacrafice killing performance, and it still shoots flat and has plenty of hitting power inside 250 yards.

Just a thought :D

whoops, checked my data at home here and the load is actually 37.6 grs H4895, does 2854 fps in a MkV Ultralight 24" tube, with Sierra GameKing BTSP

for a lighter recoiling pure varmint load, I think a 75 gr Vmax or 87 gr spitzer over enough 4895 to drive it to 3300 fps would work

I have done this, and do not regret it. Trade rifle for scope, which is for another rifle.
My way of thinking was to get a super setup out of it, and let one of my rifles that I had 2 of,which were close to the same . :D

Hey Greg,
My load for the 243 is 43gr's of H4350 and a 95 gr ballistic tip.
I shoot this exclusively out of my 243, and it works great for vermin, and deer.
As for the 25-06. I've got so many heavy loads for the 25-06, I havent rolled any yet. I rec'd 5 boxes of 117 gr BTSP's over (dont quote me) 52 gr's of 4831. They shoot extremely well out of my Ruger Mk1, and I still havent fed through all of em...
but I've rolled a bunch of 75 gr Vmax's over 58 gr's of H4350 and they scream, and are accurate as hell... Definately not a deer load though.
And just as an FYI, I'd try a decent pad on the 25-06 before I flogged it if it were me, and keep in mind, She'll likely be wearing alot more padding come November right, so it might not be that bad.
