I was wondering if people here could give me some names of dealers in Canada who handle double rifles, not necessarily highend products as I have a budget but doubles non the less. Also can you tell me how a person goes about importing a rifle from Europe, are there any companies that do this for a fee.

Welcome Easttrout. Caught the double rifle bug, have you? It is an expensive habit to feed. Your best bet for an economy double rifle is a used under / over in a mid range calibre, such as a Brno. If you insist on a SxS, well, the sky is the limit. Inexpensive double rifle SxS's are never satisfying. Don't rule out black powder express rifles as they will save you some money, and nitro for black load information is available.

P&D Enterprises in Edmonton has access to the Blaser line, which includes doubles, and I think Merkel line as well. I am sure Les Paul in Ontario can find you a double. Don't hope to find one on a shelf.

There are several on this board have had first hand experience importing a gun from Europe - perhaps they will chime in.

Welcome easttrout

The Shooting Edge ( http://www.theshootingedge.com ) is a Fabarm dealer. The Asper line it doesn't look bad at all, but I must admit I have never shot one nor have I spoken with anyone that has it.

http://www.fabarm.it , here is the link to their site (copy and paste).

Good luck and if you get one don't forget to drop by and give us a full range report.

Stay safe.

There is a store called Dante's or something like that in Quebec that imports Chapuis doubles. Chapuis are suposed to be a realy good rifle for the price... I looked at ordering a Ugex in 9.3x74R about 2 years ago, I realy wish I had just bought the dam thing as I would have it right now....

I own a Baikal sxs in 30-06 that I picked up for $1050 new. I did a range report on Gunnutz about it, if you do a serch you can problably find it under hunting arms. The bottom line on that particular rifle was I had to send it back due to some problems.

Do you know much about double rifles and barrel regulation?? I think I wrote a bit about it on here as well, should be under another Baikal sxs thread.

Thanks for the replies, I will definately be looking into the Calgary store and would like to see one of teh Bakiels as well

The one possible downside to the Baikals is that you may not be able to get parts should ever need them. Baikals are made in Russia.
The Merkels and other European doubles start at about 6 to 8 grand US the last time I looked.
Buying one in any of the classic African calibres, like .470 NE, means you're looking at very, very expensive ammo. Midway lists Federal .470 NE 500 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw ammo at $236.99US per 20. A-Square 500gr FNSP's are a bit cheaper at $91.99US per 10. That's $101.90Cdn plus shipping, duty and taxes. You're likely looking at about $20 a shot. You could reload though. Midway lists A-Square .470 NE brass at $43.49US per 10. 100 empty Norma brass at $319.99US. $3.20US each. Plus shipping, duty and taxes.

s it possible to build a double rifle using a S X S shotgun frame as a starting point?

IIRC Butch Searcy built some double rifles on shotguns.

A classic African caliber includes the .375 H&H....

Baikals have been sold in Canada since the 1950's... and they are now sold by Remington in the US and called Spartan. Parts have never been a problem and are not likely to be in the future.

Has anybody here used one of the Fabarm O/U double express rifles that are advertised by The Shooters Edge, I am really interested in the one in 9.3 x 74

Welcome to the double rifle investment game!, ......one is never enuff!
First off, decide what your max investment can be, then buy a few good books on doubles so you can understand the lingo and the cartridges available, and the various grades of manufacture, ....high end British, mid-range British, German and Austrian, Belgian, and so on.
Become a regular visitor to http://forums.nitroexpress.com/ and http://www.accuratereloading.com/ . Now, follow up the rifles for sale that are mentioned and look them over well so that you become familiar with the styles and terms.
Check out the Martini/Hagn website at http://martiniandhagngunmakers.com/index.htm for any doubles for sale, and don't be shy to call Ralf and see what he may have or hear about. He knows most of us that are in the doubles field and will let you know who's got anything for sale.
Go to the Calgary show at Easter and look at what's available (there were 11 this year) and talk with those who have doubles on the tables, ask who else is known to be in the doubles game (it's a small world!)
Take your time, listen well, and be ready to jump when something good comes up that is highly recommended by others. But don't get caught like many buying name only, .............there are H&H's that are only worth $3000, and there are H&H's worth 40 times that!
Bottom line is learn before jumping in, .....it's too costly.
