Doubles with a Pump?

My Mossberg 500 works well. When I have a little practice under my belt I can hit 90%+ of my doubles. I have only done triples a couple of times. It's pretty darn hard when you throw them yourself and have to pump your gun twice.

I do it all the time in sporting clays. Takes a little practice to get fast. You may have a slight disadvantage over people with O/U's or semis but it's minimal with practice.

I shoot my pump gun for sporting clays once in a while and on tight pairs I"d rather have my semi or o/u. For most presentations it's not a handicap and it does get easier with practice.

I shoot with a friend that has used his old 870 in 'Wobbles'. That's similar to ATA with differing trajectories and an optional second shot on a single clay.

He did just fine.

The best scores I have shot in sporting clays have been with my old model 12. Kinda hard to admit 'cuz I have some expensive O/U's that I don't shoot as well. I can shuck a pump as fast as required. No handicap in the reload speed for me.

I shoot skeet a bit, mostly with my Browning Auto-5 Light 12. once in a while I use my Model 12, 16Ga Winchester. it works about as good as the automatic if I don,t forget to pump it.

I don't do any formal type shooting just me and buddies in the back 40. I can easily hit doubles (again this is hillbilly shooting) with a pistol gripped mossberg. Triples are maybe 50% to get all 3 with the pistol grip. Anyways, if I can do it with a pistol grip I am sure there are many out there that can use a pump in formal shoots and kick ass with it.

In 05 or 06 the winner of the New Zealand Handicap Skeet (handicapped by class, not lack of arms or legs) won with an 870. Craig was his name, didn't win any friends in the Perrazi set.

The first time I ever shot clays, it was with an 870 express. After an hour or so, I was shooting double consistently with it. I use a Mossberg 500 for clays and can usually make the doubles. Its certainly do-able, but a semi or double would be better probably. If you like a challenge, go for the pump.

Won three of the four "pump gun only" Sporting Clays shoots I've entered ... and don't find the pump a handicap whatsoever for most shooting. The single choke can be a bit of a setback with demented target setters, however, if you're on - you're on !

I wouldn't neccessarily pick a pump first for the recreational target Sports, but Sporting, 5-Stand, 16 yard Trap singles and Skeet at the Club level aren't problematic. Tougher courses and competition ATA Trap/Doubles, International Skeet and International Trap, is almost all "first choice O/U", as is English Sporting & FITASC.
