So, very cool that we now have a Dove season in Ontario (used to LOVE dove-hunts as a kid growing up in west Tx.). BUT, we have to use non-toxic shot.... and I can't find any non-toxic shot in small enough shot-size - like 71/2 or 8. Neither Cabelas nor Lebarons list anything smaller 6 in their catalogues, and I went by the Oshawa SAIL store & they said that they did get 3 flats in, but they were all sold & they had no idea when they might get more delivered.

Any ideas, please??

Non-toxic for doves.
Lame.

TOTALLY STOOPID! Seriously, why did 'they' do that?????

You normally go up two sizes when you switch to steel, so Fe 6 will work as well as Pb 8. In theory anyway.

It might be equivalent in terms of range, pattern etc, but how much meat would be left on a dove after you hit it with 6-size shot?? I wanna eat 'em, not just blow 'em up.....

So how about non-toxic shot for reloading? Anybody seen any for sale? All I need then is a good 12 ga. load recipe and the old MEC 600Jr. can crank out enough to keep the doves worried.

remember #6 steel shot is lighter, so it wont deform and make a huge hole, also looses speed fast because of light density, and 6 isnt much bigger then 7.5 0r 8, only about 0.010 or 0.020 thou, like a sheet of paper is .008 so not that bad.

Well, that really seems to make some sense to me (although math has never been my strong point......). I'm gonna try those 6's & I'll let y'all know how it goes. :)

My local gun shop has a huge supply of #8 and #7 steel for doves. pricey from what I was hoping but cheaper than duck loads by about half. $13.00 a box I think is what I paid.. 12 or 20 guage. I picked up four boxes but will be going back next week and plan on buying them out.

You must have to weigh what's left of them on small reloader scale..

I've shot pigeons with #6 lead and eaten them, it doesn't tare em up too bad.

I bought some Remington Sportsman Hi-Speed steel. I have a 20 gauge so for me, its only available in #7 shot, but there is more size variety if you have a 12 gauge. I paid $9.99 at Epps and I know that Bass Pro has it for $12.99 a box. I bought the last box of 20 gauge but they may have stock on 12 gauge. Federal makes a game and target load in #6 and #7 which Bass Pro has priced at $10.49 a box.

didn't think doves had become a problem bird. only ones around my parents place in beeton are Mourning doves. and there aren't many there.

Now canada geese i can see being a serious problem bird now.

You're thinking the non toxic requirement for doves is a bit silly, while others like me are just grateful that we finally have a season around here. More ammo should be available as retailers will be getting requests for smaller non toxic shot already.

As for shot size, you could hunt doves with BB shot if you wanted too with little meat damage as the pattern would be so sparse that you'd likely only hit the bird with a pellet or two. Unlike most, I prefer larger #4-5 shot for grouse and rabbit as I don't enjoy a bunch of tiny 7 1/2's or 8's in my meat and the larger pellets tend to pass through the animal rather than staying in them.

Good point regarding the larger size. I didn't consider that.

I was out today with 2 friends. We were using Kent #7 steel and the Remington #6 steel.
Both worked well. Had a great time. Quick little buggers, very sporting!
I am a lucky fellow with access to a pair of gravel quarries....doves everywhere.
Happy Hunting.
