I am planning to buy a Ruger American chambered in .17 hmr this spring, as well as a scope. The gun accepts 3/8 dovetail but is also tapped for #12 weaver mounts.

So my question is should i buy 3/8 dovetail rings, or buy weaver #12 rails and weaver rings? What do you guys prefer personally?

Go with the Waver bases. Positive locking preventing movement plus placement will be consistent when/if you remove and reinstall.

I agree ... buy the Weaver bases, but look around for rings other than the old standard Weavers. No problems with them holding the scope in place, but they can be a bytch as far as getting the reticle true to the world, as they always twist the scope off to the side a bit when you tighten the screws down ... so you have to start with the scope twisted a wee bit in the opposite direction. It's a guessing game I hate playing, and in my mind, it increases the chances of leaving ring marks on the scope.

There are countless of other rings that will fit the Weaver bases ... even Leupold makes some that will fit. I like their Weaver "style" quick detach rings. Burris rings with the inserts are fairly popular as well, and are pretty much foolproof, and as mentioned, there plenty of other choices.
