Dovetailing a bull barrel

Has anyone done this? I'm leaning towards a short bull barreled build on a 10/22 with Iron sites.

If anyone has done this what did it cost you?

I've done it to correct a canted sight on a cooey before. Not a bull barrel but the principle is the same. I used a triangle file with one side ground smooth so it wouldnt cut deeper, and a regular fine and coarse single bastard file, along with some teeny needle files to finish it off.

The most important thing is prep, and keeping everything square, checking, and checking again. When I was close I was testing for fit with every couple light passes of the file. Keeping the area marked out with tape helps, as does taking rough measurements with a vernier caliper.

Nice work Mikey. How many hours filing did you have into that?

Honestly if i was to do it myself, i would start with a 1/4 end mill and take out some metal before all the hand work.

It didnt even cross my mind to do this myself. I think we even have some dovetail cutters in the machine shop at work.

We have the Tech bull barrel adapter in stock, PM for more details.

Thanks, from start to finish it took me about 1/2 an hour. As innercity remind me I did use the side of a coarse file to take a good bit of meat out before getting into the touchy stuff. But again I ground one side smooth in that operation too, so as not to widen the dovetail any further than necessary. Take it slow and steady, and if possible practice on an old piece of steel bar first. It really not that difficult if you are careful and have a good eye. If you don't have such a good eye, it would be advisable to make a jig utilizing a pocket level to determine the top dead center of the barrel.

Something I think I should mention which I hadn't considered... Is that I had the old dovetail to use as a measuring reference. I used my vernier caliper as a depth gauge to determine how deep I needed to cut. If you have access to another gun that has a dovetailed front sight, you should pop it out and take a bunch of measurements.

Ya. I have a take off barrel with the front sight. I think im going to give it a go with some 1" shaft first to see how it goes.

Thanks for the tips!

Sorry for necro-posting, but, do you still have these? I need one for my 10/22 build with tech sights.
