I had a 54 cal Remington 700 for a few years but sold it probably 10-15 years ago. I didn’t play with it much, as it was hard to find components for it, and found what worked acceptably.

Now that my son is getting more into hunting and shooting I’m wondering if it is possible to download a 50 cal to a tolerable level for practice and slowly work his way up to hunting loads?

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks!

Can you use reduced loads? Absolutely you can. I use 50 grain pyrodex pellets and generally shoot 100 grains for hunting, but have shot 50 grain loads at the range. With loose propellant you can work up a good load that he can tolerate.

Exactly as mcpiper has said above. Using one pellet loads (or 30 to 60 grains loose powder) is a great way to get someone going with an inline. You can also use .451 roundball in a sabot with light charges (25-40 grains) for putting holes in paper, but they go squirrely in a hurry once you bump the powder charge too high.

That is fantastic to hear. Thanks for confirming!

When looking at an inline, is there anything specific to look for? Not looking at spending big money, just want something reliable and decently accurate.

I am biased but would recommend the CVA Wolf. They are dirt cheap, very reliable and stupid accurate for the price. Mine has put many a deer in the freezer.

Look for a break open action with an easy removable breech plug. I have a traditions vortek and love it, it is super accurate and so easy to clean. It has a ported barrel that tames down recoil and makes shooting 250 g sabots a breeze. It is a bit heavy, but I hunt from a blind and use shooting sticks.
