In one of the current auctions, there is an Indian DP Mk. III rifle being offered. Hole drilled through, pinned, and an additional weld that I've not noted before.
Current bid is $1250 (plus commission and tax). Usual filthy, battered exterior condition.
Am I missing something here?

People are going crazy, that is all. It comes and goes. I’ve been watching Ross prices closely for a few years. In 2020 a MkIiI HG rifle with a ‘fair’ bore went for $7800 plus fees and taxes. That is absolutely insane. The same buyer bought two others at $3-4,000 each as well that year. They had tapered off post Covid, but clearly someone wants this DP’d mess pretty bad.

People became both excited and territorial during auctions especially when they watch the auction for 10 days or so.

They can justify higher & higher bids to themselves as the end of the auction draws near.

I am not a bidder, but I predict it sells more than its current sticker price.

Because people are idiots.
I bet you are right. And what’s the point? A non oil soaked repro stock set, both bands and hood are way under $1250, plus the stock has the Currygun through hole chewed out of it. Wouldn’t be my choice for a route to desporterization that’s for sure.

Sometimes you also get people who aren’t doing their homework and just see the rifle and not the full picture. Might think it is a intact Ross, and not a DP as well.

Auctions are a great way for some to pass off problem guns.

Auctions are great places to dispose of things you would not sell to a friend.

It took a least two bidders to get the thing up to 1250.

I was thinking about selling my "shooter" Mk. III. It is a restored sported rifle, decent bore. Restocked with an original NOS replacement stock. If that clunk is worth $1250, plus commission and tax, my shooter should bring well over two grand. I was interested in that DP because I have a restoration candidate, complete with nose cap. I could stretch the cut forend with a splice under the band; or that DP stock could be cleaned up and armourer style patches inletted to repair the notches. But that isn't going to happen.

Here's another one...
McSherry Auction, #15.
Nicely sported 03A3, receiver drilled and tapped, aperture sight installed.
With 9 days to go, it is at $600. Buyers' commission is 10%, plus tax.
If it weren't drilled and tapped, it could be restored to issue condition - the parts can be had. But a stock with handguard and all the assorted hardware aren't cheap. It would total well over a thousand. And it would still be a restored sporter. The holes could be plugged, of course, but the harm has been done.

If it is actually nicely sportered, they commonly sell in the $600-800 range in the USA. Maybe it’s a fair price?
Nah, it's crazy for a clapped out DP'd rifle. Having said that, A Ross in good shape (serviceable), and in full military kit, is getting really hard to find. They haven't made them in over 100 years, and even then, they only made so many...so?

Cut issue stock, aperture sight mounted. Neatly done, but not a full sporter job.
03A3s are less often seen in Canada than 03s.55726454_1 A3.jpg

And probably 90% + were lost, destroyed, or sold to foreign nations to be never seen again.
