After only owning and shooting milsurps, as far as rifles are concerned, Ive decided I need a range rifle which is a little more up to date.

For reasons unknown Im leaning towards getting a DPMS rifle.

After using the search function and finding no information about the rifles Im considering, Ive decided to start a new topic.

Ive been looking at the DPMS bull 24 special
ww.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=1052&cat=1735

and comparing it to its cheaper brother the bull 24. (ww.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=1435&cat=1735)

Is the special worth the extra money?

Im leaning towards .223 over .308. I wish to see the rifle hit targets reaching 800m or so, so perhaps my caliber wish isnt the best idea, again, what would you advice.

Im an utter newbie to the black gun scene, so please speak slowly and use small words :)

Thanks!

1 in 7 twist as Savage pointed out is the ideal twist for the AR with 62 grain plus ammo. Stag arms sells a 1 in 7 barrel but I personally have no experience with them. Somebody else might have some words of wisdom. I have owned a Bushmaster for many years and have never been disappointed, but they are getting scarce.

After looking into it in greater detail, and contacting DPMS.
Ive run into a few issues.

I could order one from the US, custom made for my needs, barrel wants etc. However, it would take 10-12 weeks to make plus the time it would take questar to do the import service which is a long time as well.

The reason I was looking into the AR platform was mainly due to the lower price tag, when compared to the swiss arms rifles. Which I would prefer. But after seeing how much it would cost, plus time, to import one, and after seeing a couple of HB AR's for sale in the EE, ive decided it would be better to go with the Black or Green Special instead... But I have a tendancy of changing my mind often on these matters.

I have given myself till the end of may to make up my mind, and then make a purchase. HB-AR vs Blackspecial...

SIGs are great rifles, but some (off the top of my head) pros / cons to both:

-The AR platform can shoot as well or better for less than 3 grand.
-You can re-use your AR brass if you handload.
-The ARs are modular, and parts readily available.
- ARs are restricted. SIGs non-restricted.
-The SIGs are drop dead reliable.
-The SIGs are essentially limited to 69 grain SMK as the heaviest bullet they'll fire. (ymmv)

I'm not sure why you are stuck on DPMS, imho they are the last manufacturer I'd be contemplating.

Tell you what,

There is a CSRA Service Rifle match this Sunday, May the 6th at Homestead.

You are welcome to come out, and try my SIG and AR side by side!
