Drano bluing guns

Hi

I want a know if there is someone who has ever used Drano solid to hot blue gun parts?How was your experience?What about the results?

Drano is a mixture of several different chemicals, but the active ingredient is sodium hydroxide, also known as lye. Drano crystals also include small aluminum chips and sodium nitrate as stabilizers, sodium chloride as a carrier and a green dye called Sun Chemical Pigment Green 7.


Don't know how this would blue, sodium nitrate is only a minor ingredient. :confused:

When I was digging up info before I staryed bluing anything, the Drano bluing turned up a few times. From what I recall, the product being used had damn near the exact ratios of hydroxide and nitrate but with the addition of aluminium flakes. Some folks were raising concerns about the aluminium causing problems during the whole process, but the results seemed to prove otherwise.

If you can find the right product, it can work.

I recall reading the same thing and guys were picking out the aluminum pieces with tweezers... Lol may take awhile for a big batch.
 
I used some walmart "drano" to hot blue a small part that I had and it worked ok aluminum flakes and all. I don't think I'd try it on an heirloom firearm but it worked for the small bit I did.
 
Something to keep in mind.... drano reacts with aluminum and oils to create hydrogen gas. Not the best thing to be creating around an open flame......
