Dreaded Rem700 matte black finish alternatives?

Hey what options is there to piss that matte black finish off these Remington's , like the SPS ..an that model seven I've got now.

It's downfall for multi day hunts an any forecast rainy days is that finish will rust up in no time.

I keep it oiled and or wd40 / CRC sprayed an wiped to keep it nice whilst stored in safe , but once in the field- inevitable.

Can it be cerecoated??
An is that about the only option?

Yes, it can be Ceracoated.

I saw one today, at a local powder coating shop, which has just started Ceracoating.

They brushed the original finish lightly, because the owner wanted to retain the original color. Then they clear coated, using a matte finish.

It looked very good, and wasn't shiny, as ceracoat tends to be.

its about that here too, maybe a little more depending on which bits are ceracoated etc?

but i wont be taking paste wax into the bushes with me?

not WD40 much, its a "multi purpose lubricant" that im using now--- keeping the other guns sweet, an in fact it keeps this one sweet but once its say a cold moisture night in the tent or a shower of rain at some stage, if you do not attend it thoroughly, it will start going orange... rem 700 owners will be more thn aware of this.
heck ive even left it in the gun bag on a summers evening, outside, an woken to it just orange (old 270 sps)


impregnating the matte finish with oil helps, for sure.
 
It’s just an SPS so degrease it and rattle can that thing! Reapply as required and CAN, pun intended, turn out very nice looking. There’s a thread on here with rattle canned guns and some very nice jobs!!

They aren't finished nearly as nicely as the more expensive grades, but they usually shoot every bit as well.

Remington actions used to be available in the white, but not for many years now.

Purchasing an SPS for the action, is a great alternative, unless you're going stainless. Even then, depending on the finish desired on the end product, the SPS makes a great "basic" rifle to strip down for a build.

Using one in the field would not be a hardship for most shooters, even the most basic model with the noisy/fugly plastic stock.

Just IMHO of course.
 
It's a Model Seven gents , but that era when Rem thought matte black was kewl.
You could call it a Model Seven "SPS" though...
Has a schit plastic stock..said matte finish..

I always wanted a full Camo paint job , old school spec, but it would hurt the model sevens resale if I want to move it o , it was last in, an could be out pending rust issues verse cost for coating without just spray and pray an running it into the ground... Which may also happen as it's a awesome go to grab and go rifle at 3kg scoped.

Look up a product called Boeshield. It’s used in the aviation industry and also by woodworkers for protection on equipment. I’ve used it on cast iron tools with great results but not on any of my guns but I wouldn’t be suprised if a carnuba/beeswax wouldn’t work great as well!
